If money is no object, you want one of these beasts, believe me :D.

I understand that, as a serious AlienWare alternative, you might look at Dell's XPS2. I have an XPS1 from work and it is really very nice, though I've not tried any games with it.

Like... this?

Yeah, they look pretty good but the last Dell laptop I used was going back a few years and wasn't exactly fantastic I can't really comment on their newer models.

And how can you not play games on a laptop like that? :D

Very similar to that (might be one model back from that). I've also had shaky experiences with various laptops, but a friend has had similar shakiness from his AlienWare so my conclusion is that laptops just take more beating than desktops.

Dell now own Alienware so when you buy an Alienware now you are technically getting a Dell ;)

Well, very very technically, but nevertheless Dell has seen fit to keep Alienware intact and has basically allowed it to carry on 'as is' independantly from the rest of the company. Which is good news for us. :D

Okay, sorry to keep shifting the crown of Ultimate Desktop Replacement, but this machine is utterly insane and stunning at the same time.

I'm a bit confused as to some of the choices the manufacturers have made here though - a laptop with a MASSIVE fecking 19" screen, but with a mobility processor inside? Dual core is a much better solution here, but it's not been used. I investigate further...

Nice stuff, but personally if i had the money i'd rather make a desktop that's easy to carry around (to LANs of course). Laptops are too much fixed component-wise.

I find DTR's useful in the lower end market segment for people who want limited mobility or don't have the space or will to have a full sized desktop machine. My ultimate laptop would be thin and have 10+ hours of battery life. :)

Dell cannot incorporate AlienWare too much because they use AMD. Dell themselves are Intel-only and get massive rebates from Intel, as such they don't want to risk these lucrative deals. Intel is known for using such monopolist tactics and exclusive agreements.

What this means for competing Dell and AlienWare lines, i have no idea.
