TF2 Reserved Slots Now Available

I am pleased to announce that Source Mod has been successfully installed on our TF2 server. This now means that we can have a customisable and convenient administration tool on the server and above all, reserved slots.

I am quite happy to have all members of THN who are registered on the forum reserved slots, so that we can obliterate the problem of never getting on our own server because of it being full. However don't let this detract us from welcoming new members or even just players to our server.

As well as reserved slots, I am looking for a dedicated, responsible and trusted admin group to help keep the server secure and enjoyable to play on. Anyone who is interested in helping out please respond to this thread or write me a PM. Considerations will be made to members who play on the server regularly, have been a member of THN for a reasonable while and are willing to represent THN in a responsible, friendly and respectful manner.

Now the important bit. To get your reserved slot, all members will need to give me their steam ID. Reply to this thread (or PM me if prefered) and state your in-game name and steam ID.
To get your steam ID, log on to a server and type "status" in the console. In the list of players, take your own name and copy the steam ID (beginning with STEAM_0: etc).
The console is accessed by pressing the ¬ button on your keyboard. If that doesn't work, go into the game options and under keyboard, press the advanced button. Make sure the developer console button is checked.

Thanks all and happy fragging.

Additional -

All new res slot users and admins will be sent a PM when their new status has been activated on the server, and any details they may need to know.

To all admins of the server. The following link should prove helpful insight into the commands the mod can accept, as some may not be provided in the menu function, or may be bugged and will not work on occasion: http://wiki.alliedmods.net/Admin_Commands_(SourceMod)

Thanks KC this is brilliant am loving TF2 at the mo.

I'll go do that now.

Also I'd like to put myself forward as a Admin for the server if I may, I'm on the server a fair amount and I think I'm friendly (although the beard can scare ppl away sometimes).

Some more information about reserved slots -

It took me a good bit of the night to get my head around this, but it appears our res slot system will have to work in the following way.

Even though our server has a max players of 24, the server will now never be full at 24 unless 24 res slot users are connected. This is because of a number of reasons:

There need to always be empty slots on the server so a res slot user can join. If the server is full, steam does not let you connect, so the res slot system cannot do its job. There are 2 reserved slots on the server, and 22 public slots, so the server can never become full from non THNers joining, they can only fill the server to 22. Now you as a THN member can join. To prevent the res slots filling up (and with two res slots, that can fill up quickly), every time a res slot member joins, a public slot is kicked, so preserving the two res slots at all times (unless there is a scenario of 24 res slot users, which is unlikely).
Why don't I increase the max players so the public can fill the server to 24? Our Team Fortress 2 server will not go above 24 players, as I have just discovered tonight.

Highly confusing :) I have tried to explain in as best a way I could. Any questions feel free to post them.

It will be every time. The server cannot afford to fill up, otherwise res slot users cannot join. A public slot has to be kicked.

So if there is one player in the server, and THN member joins, that one player gets kicked?

Sorry for the confusion Big D. I backtracked our posts and realised I respond to your second post incorrectly. This whole thing has confused the hell out of me.
To set things straight, a public slot will only be kicked when a res slot user joins if the public slots are full at 22, therefore preserving the 2 res slots at all times.

ok, thanks :) Just wanted to make sure it wasn't kicking all the time (which would be incredibly ridiculous ;))

Last night we had a full server and a situation where many THN members who had not given me their steam ID were complaining on Teamspeak that they could not get on the server. I ended up adding numerous res slots on the spot during the middle of my game time so that they could play. If anyone else in THN who plays TF2 wants a res slot, please send me your steam ID either through private message or in this thread. I will be able to set your reserved slot up very quickly and not while I'm in the middle of a game. Thanks.

On another note, I witnessed a problem with the reserved slot last night aswell. As THN members were telling me on teamspeak that they kept getting dropped due to slot reservation, I knew the slot system was working. However, when people attempt to join when the server is at 22 players, the reserved slots seem to become occupied. This generates the situation where the server becomes full at 24/24, meaning even res slot users can't get in. These slots eventually became free while the res slot system kicked people, but I'm guessing people were constantly trying to connecting, which again took up player slots.
I don't know if there is any way around this, however if you are having difficulty getting on when the server is full, and you have a reserved slot, just keeping trying. Slots should be freed up very quickly.

I noticed at one time 23 people were actualy in game at some point, so I am concerned that something is wrong somewhere.

Anyway, enough of the confusing rant.

Might be possible to setup something sneaky where if someone keeps trying to connect when slots are full it sticks a like, 30 second ban onto them, so to try to kick the connection earlier and take some time off the res module

I'd say we don't want to scare off the majority of non-THN players. After all, they're all potential THNers.

Also, someone mentioned that idle players are booted into spectator mode to even the teams up, can we have 24 players and extra spectators, or you could disable specatating somehow - so when ppl choose spectate they get kicked, or idle players kicked after 150 seconds etc?

You could have a second* "passworded" server.

btw KC you did great last night.

Im guessing if you remove the vac secure or the stats tracker you can push the server size above 24? because you could have a second server like that, if thats possble?

I can't increase the player size from 24 unless I downloaded a cracked engine file, which I don't really fancy doing. As for kicking idle players, I am sure that is possible. However I can't look into this until perhaps tomorrow or sunday. I'll also see if I can disable spectating aswell.
