Ok my current wireless mouse that has served me very well over the past 3-4 years or so is beginning to show its age, so I want a new one!

Wireless or corded, I don't mind.

Its main use is for gaming purposes.

I also would very much like a mouse that had at least one button on the side that I can whack with my thumb. I have become too used to using a button on the side of my mouse in that position and having to get used to a new button press would make me even worse at CoD than I already am :/ I therefore consider this a requirement of my new mouse.

As for price, I would hope for something no more than £50 - though if it really is worth it I would consider going higher.

I would like your recommendations, with reasons :D

Personally, I've never liked the Razer mice. Wrong shape for me.

Instead, I've been using the trusty Logitech MX510 for years. Looks like that's no longer available on quick inspection, but the Logitech MX518 looks to be equivalent and a much more sensible price.

That said, I find that mouse surface is just about as important as the mouse itself and I bought my current mouse in a pack with an S&S Steel mat. Can't find that available anywhere either but I'm sure any decent sized surface would do you.

I'm sure bob will be here soon to shed his verdict, however he had the MX518, and swapped it out for the (blue version) of the logitech G5, that has two side buttons instead of one, Personally its an awesome mouse and I would very much recommend it to you.

Although bloke, if you can wait till i34, and buy one there, you can test out the different mouses on the customPC stand, or our mouses at the desks :)

The MX518 then - nothing fancy; 5 buttons, 3 sensitivity settings. Rather cheap. I like it.

Both the razer lachesis (the mouse I am currently using) and the logitech G9 fit your needs. Both are at the high end of gaming. If you want cheap but good then grab a logitech MX series mouse. Failing all that, Microsoft make surprisingly good mice that are worth a look for mid-range price brackets.

All the mice I recommend are wired, as that is my personal preference, but some will have wireless alternatives.

I have a Boomslang (yeah I'm old skool :P), a Copperhead and a Lachesis. Of all of them the Boomslang has the best feel for someone with large hands, but the Lachesis is the nearest you can get in an updated revision and is my favourite over the copperhead. Both the Copperhead and the Lachesis are suitable for people with medium/small hands as well though.

I've never liked the feel of the razor mice, they seem all backward and not hand shaped, where the logitechs have a nice ergonomic bit that fits the thumb nicely the razor seem to prefer a this isn't hand shaped at all approach. Not to say they aren't good mice, I personally find them quite painful to use for long periods.
I'd say if you are looking logitech wise go for the G5, the laser does make a bit of difference of the optical but not a lot. The main reason I'd say go for the G5 over the mx-518 (I loved that thing btw) is the much improved feet on the G5 compared to the many tiny feet on the mx-518. The middle mouse button is more useful on the G5 (not sure how to word it I just prefer it), the ability to adjust the weight of the mouse is also a nice touch I thought I'd find pointless but really like.
There's lots of little tiny thing that for me make the G5 a better mouse that the mx-518.

I personally found the G9 to be kinda weird. It is again a very good mouse but for me they'd gone a bit too outlandish with it for my taste, it's a bit too strange and out there.

It's all about personal preference, I don't like saying just get this, as some people with broken backwards hands :p (it may just be my tiny fingers) love the razers, I'm a logitech man.

I'd say best thing to do is have £40 ready for a mouse with you at i34, as kustom pc are there, they'll have all the latest gaming mice, the deathadder the new sharkoon one, the G9 and G5 they'll have the boomslangs as well and more than likely the cyborg saitek one. You can play around take your mat down with you and see how each feels. That way you only have yourself to blaim if you don't like it.
