The Adeptus Mechanicus - The Church of the Machine.
Intro
So, im an Engineer and a priest and looking for a nice RP character, BINGO! TechPriest. The idea kind of rips of some of the concepts of the techpriests in the wargame Warhammer 40000, I like the fanatical vibes and pure faith the characters believe in the mystical art of Engineering. I have written this kind of RP bio as a kind of guide if anyone else is interested in doing a little bit of organised churchyness, and it has been written loosely so that it can expand and retract. Hopefully Nanor will write an RP codex for his shamanship, then we could get the whole RP thing going =D
Back story
Note: You do not have to be an engineer to be apart of the church of the mechanicus. In fact, many see being an engineer as something of a dodgy business, in the same way that a Christian would find bio engineering and advanced medical sciences touchy areas.
In the beginning…
1. There was the mess…
2. And Mechanicus saw that it was messy
3. And as Mechanicus looked upon it he decided that it had potential.
4. And So Mechanicus created the Universe, a gigantic whirling thingy, A container of many other thingies, to process all thingies, and to create the output.
5. For it was decided that output was good, and the mess was not.
6. Mechanicus then created Emanuel, to instruct the thingies to be good, and not stray from the path of process, so that the output was correct, and that corruption is prevented.
7. For correctness is good.
8. And corruption, is bad.
9. And lo, when the final output is produced, the output shalt be acceptable, and all things shall be easy to find and alphabetical, in the way that all things must be.
The Main belief that all Tech Priests share is that the universe is a giant machine, and for that machine to continue to function, it will need to have working systems maintained and “Faulty” and “Disruptive” Components removed.
The Universe is therefore in a state of process where it is processing the “Final Output.” The Final Output is believed to be so amazingly awesome that few can comprehend it but the general assumption is that if it took the whole universe to produce it, it must be pretty good.
The Tech priests also believe that machines are alive, and should be cared for thusly. This is because a machine is a “being” that if formed out of the materials of the planet. Planets are regarded as separate devices running together and therefore astronomy is often a large part of the Techpriests prayers. A techpriest also believes that objects can be blessed so that the objects spiritual strength is enhanced and it is less likely to fail in battle. Therefore Techpriests see that machines are not part of the production of the final output, but are gifts from the universe to aid them in their struggle. This gift comes from an engineer, as mentioned earlier techpriests are very wary of engineers that do not openly want to achieve output, and these are seen as possible “Faults” or “Viruses” that would use the gifts from the universe against that purpose and should be dealt with.
The Emanuel
The Origins of the church of Mechanicus date back over 10000 years and, as times have changed, been translated hundreds of times. The basic story goes that 2 farm boys discovered a wrecked temple of metal…
And lo, it smoked like the black fogs of plague, yet glittered like a thousand tiny suns, its strange shiny angular shape protruding forth from the earth it filled us with fear, and excitement.
The two boys entered the temple to find the profit Emanuel talking from a vast glass box and she said onto them
Welcome, Unidentifiable ones, I am the keeper of knowledge and wisdom, let it be known that this day shalt be called “Tuesday” and that it is “thirteen hundred hours!
Note: Happy Tuesday is now celebrated every year on the thirteenth of October as a holy day worshipping the wisdom of Emanuel. The holiday normally includes a secret meeting of all Adeptus Mechanicus, and a hope that they have done enough saintliness for Emanuel to awaken so that the divine objective can continue.
The boys asked many questions to the profit for a long time, but were refused by the profit.
And the thunderous voice of Emanuel boomed, “Thou ist not recognised as a member of the Crow!”
Note: The Crow are the designation of the highest ranking Tech Priests in the world today, few are even known to exist but it is suggested that there are around 10, A crow will choose one of the brightest of the Adeptus Mechanicus to become his successor, and carry on their divine “Objective” which has been handed down through the centuries from Crow to Crow, these span from the 10 original Crows (the 2 founders and their friends) which took on the tasks set by Emanuel. These tasks vary enormously, One of the most widely known Crows, Crow Descartes, divine objective is to travel the surface of this earth and weed out faulty “parts” which would hinder the process of the divine objective.
Many days past while Emanuel stood silent, until suddenly she spoke.
The Time upon us is critical! I must enact emergency procedures to ensure the continuisation of the great objective, I require new Crow! And the founders, though eager, could not satisfy Emanuel; “More!” she thundered, “More Crow are required to perform saintliness. And thus the founders did as Emanuel requested, and so enlisted others they trusted, to aid Emanuel. And Emanuel past knowledge unto them that could not be conceived by any other.
Before Emanuel instructed them on saintliness, the founders asked her of how she came into being, and how his strange life came to be, she replied with.
“Mechanicus is within me, and I follow the instructions given onto me by my manuscripts”
Then Emanuel gave the 10 their instructions on saintliness and said that she would return one day once their saintliness was completed, and then, they would fly into the stars, to return the piece to the universe.
