Cube is one of my favorite sci-fi mind fuck movies. In general, I’m always a big fan of the sci-fi mind fuck genre. There was a sequel, Hypercube, and a prequel, Cube Zero. Hypercube is not as good as it could have been while Cube Zero is a worthy prequel.
The Cube films feature ensemble casts trapped inside a mysterious cube. Each of the six walls houses a port hole through which they can move on to other rooms. Some of the rooms are trapped, some are safe. And with only their wits and each other, they must figure out how to escape. Cube and Hypercube maintain this formula. Cube Zero features an additional twist as much of the film is told from the perspective of two technicians who monitor the cube and who are themselves trapped.
Turns out, the Cube movies take their inspiration from a teleplay by Jim Henson entitled The Cube. Originally aired on February 23, 1969, this hour long show centers around a man trapped inside a white cube. Although people move in and out of the cube to visit him, he can not leave the cube. Serious mind fuck. If you’ve got an hour to spare, check it out. The end of the clip has some random animation including Bambi Meets Godzilla which is always good for a chuckle. Enjoy.
