Moving to Virgin though. Anybody else had any experience with them? I was using it in the centre of London on Monday and had no d/c's. So I'm thinking that they are fairly stable. Anybody had them before?

I would just like a connection where the above doesn't happen on a regular basis; so much so that it's now become my 'fashion statement'. xD

my parents have Virgin Cable and the connection is rock solid and ping times are always low, there is some throttling at peak times however ping stays low so i have very few problems with it when i'm there.
The biggest problem i have with the service is the default Netgear router is a pile of crap, connecting directly to the modem is rock solid where as the router seems to lock up as you try to copy stuff between a couple of machines on the network. it may just be a dodgy router, however i've never been a fan of the "cheap and nasties" that are provided for you

It should also be noted that from everything i have heard the ADSL Virgin offer is a pile of utter crap so depending on what you have gone for YMMV

But surely it can't be worse than what I'm getting at the moment? I've already tried BT which, for me at least, is nearly as bad as my current service. Just stupidly high lag instead of constant d/c's.

Salisbury is probably just a bad area. I dunno. I'm hoping that Virgin is better, because if not, my raiding life is doomed forever. xD

This is the question really. Virgin cable is a tres good thing.
Virgin ADSL are an exciting experience. When I lived in suffolk and was possibly the only person using the exchange it was brilliant. Got 6M of my 8M and was throttled very little.
Moved to Soton and was a different experience terrible throttling and awful pings as soon as it hit peak times.

I'd say wait and see.

I've never had issues with Tiscali, apart from when I forgot their Fair Usage Policy and did some heavy (non-torrent) downloading during their peak times (6pm - 11pm) and got shunted onto a worse connection for a week or two as contractual "punishment".

Basically, so long as you don't do heavy torrenting or excessive downloading during the 6pm-11pm period, they honestly don't care, and the connection itself has always been nice and stable.

My only gripe with them is that there is no paperwork or letter alerts, it's ALL via an email account you set up with them. Whilst you can set up fowarding and whatnot, it's still a pain in the backside, but that's one flaw with an otherwise good ISP.

In all honesty I did have a bad two days with virgin and blew it out of proportion. Never really get any issues with it other than that. Am using cable, can't speak for their ADSL - no idea.

Hm. Doesn't sound so bad now.

Also, I convinced my mother (or rather, she convinced herself) that the 50MB fibre optic line is worth it. This was probably helped by the fact that it took a good couple of minutes to load the web page. We're ordering it all tomorrow. ^_^
