The Forgotten Soldier

When I was on holidays, to pass the time I got a book called The Forgotten Soldier. It's a book about a Frenchman, called Guy Sajer (Well, it's his pseudonym), drafted into the Wehrmacht at 16 to fight on the Eastern Front. It's a great read!

You read about his three years fighting against the Russians on the Eastern Front and the difficulties he meets, like starvation, exhaustion and Stalin's Organs (Russian artillery). You read about the friends he meets and the encounters they have on the front.

He's a zealous man won over by propaganda and the excitement of a weapon in his hands but we read how he begins to disbelieve all these things when he's drafted into the Großdeutschland Division, an elite motorized division of the Wehrmacht, and is forced to fight in horrible conditions.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about warfare, or enjoys a good read. You can get it from play for £5.99 delivered, or from Amazon for £5.99 also but you have to pay for delivery.

People have debated whether it's genuine or not, but one of the characters freinds in the book contacted someone to tell them it was genuine. He also mentions many things in the book, like a battleship that was providing indirect fire which few knew about.
