The Future of Gaming? Project Natal

Erm, it's nothing new. It's motion track (like the PlayStation EyeToy did), a "multi-array" microphone to pick up direction of audio, a depth sensor (which is pretty cool, but still something even the Wii can do) and software for face and voice recognition. Also, it's Microsoft. Do you really think it will be AMAZING, or just good?

Still, at least they are still pushing technology forward I guess. I just see it and think, "Wow, it's like the EyeToy. And that changed the world so much." Maybe I'm just jaded and cynical. I kind of hope I am :(

Still, ta for the link blokey bloke!

Too much interface lag for it to be worthwhile in any action game.
Unless they make it more real time, in which case awesome :)

How will you fire guns and things though?

How will you fire guns and things though?

Maybe you make a gun noise with your mouth? I can imagine it now:

calling in an airstrike in cod: "neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeoooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwww BOOM"

Fire my gun dammit:
"dakka-dakka-dakka"

a silenced gun:
"I am teh ghey"

a sniper rifle:
"HEADSHOT, BITCH!"

etc. :D

So it seems that Johnny Lee, of the Head Tracking for Desktop VR Displays using the WiiRemote fame is working on Project Natal! This single fact has got me excited.

Edit - Let me expand on that. People are asking about the shooting games and how this will help. Well, imagine the tech above used as a head tracking in CoD20. You move you're head, and you can physically peak around corners and stuff. In driving games, moving your head shifts your PoV slightly, so you can actually look around you and stuff. That would be AWESOME.

Eurogamer (well, actually, Digital Foundry, who write for Eurogamer) have an article on Natal at GamesCom. It covers a little more of how the technology works and some limitations; for example, it doesn't track fingers.

The general gist is that Natal is probably going to expand Microsoft's market and offer new/different types of games more than it is going to affect us as core gamers.

Immersion gaming has always been the next level realistically. Ever since rumble packs in controllers this is where every developers been going, slowly but surely anyway. I guess after Nintendo’s marketing messiah the other’s are actually shoving some funding into this future, rather than a re-vamp of the console + controller system only.

I hope this is going to be revolutionary. But i doubt it. I'm not going to be getting my hopes up for microsoft playing their age old game of 'lets rip off our competitors'

Plus this. Quote -"That’s exactly what Natal does. Sitting underneath the TV and containing cameras and microphones, the device can see you, and hear what you say. It recognises movements in 3D, and is smart enough to follow you around the room, tell the difference between you and other people on the sofa,"

Does that not creep anyone else out?
