The "unbreakable" phone...

Yeah read this yesterday and it made me smile, reminds me of when I got handed "un-tearable paper" once in a previous job. The results were pretty obvious and the sales person was pretty pissed :)

To be honest, if he's claiming that you can bang a nail with it, it should also be able to withstand being mashed against the corner of the fish tank :D

Well the problem was obviously in him hitting the fishtank with the DISPLAY. The rest of the phone seemed quite impervious, but there's only so much you can do with plexiglass.

The phone is unbreakable and can apparently be used to "hammer a nail". I would expect a phone with such claims attached to it to be able to handle being bashed against something like the guy was doing

Well he bashed it against the corner of the tank concentrating the force on a small point, and nail heads are flat spreading the force over a larger area and all that.

Lets be honest here, the end of a nail is still pretty small. I dont think theres going to be an amazing amount of difference between the forces exerted from hitting a nail like this, compared to the edge of a tank.

And since when have you hammered a nail in where the hammer hits the nail head so it is perfectly parallel (e.g. doesnt hit one of the sharper corners first).... Its going to hit a corner of the nail head first.

IF someone claims that the phone is 'unbreakable' then I'd assume theyd include the display as one of those things, and to provide suitable protection on it.

The nail is still a lot more flimsy than the edge of a structure like the fish tank. Presuming the nail has already been hammered in to start with, as I just can't imagine being able to start hammering with the phone, then I'm sure you could break the screen with the nail.

Are we now arguing the flimsyness of metal compared with glass?! I seriously reject that point completely as I feel that its complete bullshit. Whats flimsyness got to do with anything anyway, even if those two objects were less flimsy than one another? If you hit a nail, it can survive a fair bit of force without bending: its a nail - thats pretty much their one specification point in its design. Similarly with a fish tank, you can bash something of the corner of it, and the glass wont bend. If i can hit a stick of metal with this phone, why can't I hit the corner of a fish tank with it?

If someone comes up to you with a phone and a big glass tank full of water, claiming that the phone is "unbreakable", and that it can hammer nails, then they should fucking well expect someone to bash the phone against the edge of the fucking tank and id expect the fucking thing to survive. Stuffs been waterproof for ages - noone cares about dunking it in a tank for a few seconds. its all about bashing stuff to oblivion, and if it cant stand up to that, then its obviously not "unbreakable" so they should stop claiming it so.

Another example why I hardly post in these forums anymore. I think your reply was extremely rude and disrespectful.

To add further to what I said, and to reply to you Wol:

In terms of flimsyness I was merely meaning the trouble you might have keeping the nail straight as you hammered, compared to bashing the phone against a structure. The nail can easily topple to one side, and there wouldn't be a lot of force on the screen.
However I was agreeing with you, that once you had the nail hammered in a bit, you could break the screen just as easily with a nail as you could with the edge of a fish tank! Did you only read the first sentence of my post or what?

Wasnt the old nokia range pretty much unkillable anyway? I once saw one of those get run over by a car and still work well enough for people to make a call with it. Why not just re-release that?

I like raging out at misbranded things. Misbranding, sales pitching or as i call it lying is basically corporate BS yelling at you how brillaint and awesome somthing is until you actually see it up close and then are severely disappointed. This however doesnt so much anger me as re-iterate how stupid it is to call anything no matter how big or how small un-somethingable. Because that something will happen.

To sum up what the sales rep actually means when he speaks.

'You can drop it from 10 stories' (but not screen down onto any corners, bumps or sharp objects. For this phone to be unbreakable you must exist in a cornerless universe. However its going to survive all your average 'oops it fell out of my pocket again' escapades.)
'You can take it down 20 feet underwater for half hour' (You cant go diving with it exactly but it'll live if you want to use it in the shower or you drop it down the toilet.)
'You can hammer a nail in with it' (I dont actually say what material you can bang the nail into... i mean i can bang a nail into, lets say cheese, with the iphone i have now. Its a bad analogy lets just say this phone is tougher than the rest.)
'Unbreakable' (i get paid a bonus everytime i say that word)

Sure its not exactly the bastion of defence they claim it to be but i submit that any other phone would have broken on the first hit. Its a rugged appliance for people who go outside alot and need a phone that can survive most natural phone mishaps. Its a classic case of corporate douche bags seraching for big marketable slogans and always picking the wrong ones.

'Unbreakable' is an unatainable quality. 'Tougher than the rest' or 'Able to survive any outdoors lifestyle' is probably more truer than not.

'Oh you've actually broken the screen...' (Corners... damn why didnt we think of that.)

Euphamism or what! Surely when you're trying to hammer a nail into something,you.... hold the nail upright to stop it from falling over. If you dont hold the nail upright before trying to hammer it, then youre just hitting a hammer against a nail against a wall?

, compared to bashing the phone against a structure. The nail can easily topple to one side

but, it doesnt when you hold it upright though :S

, and there wouldn't be a lot of force on the screen.
However I was agreeing with you, that once you had the nail hammered in a bit, you could break the screen just as easily with a nail as you could with the edge of a fish tank!

Why does the nail have to be hammered in a bit first though? Why cant you just hammer it in from the start?

Did you only read the first sentence of my post or what?

Nope, I read all of it. The second half of your post started talking about presuming that "the nail had already been hammered in", surely at which point.... you wouldn't be trying to hammer it as the nail was already in, so I was really confused as to what you meant by that. :S

Apologies if my post appeared to be rude and disrespectful. Your post pissed me off, so that would have come across in the reply.

Thats all I've got to say on the matter.

Did you really have to go off in such a fury at something so daft? Talking about bloomin hammering nails with phones and bashing it against fish tanks. I've never been so embarrased to take part in such a post in all my life.

Hi! I'm wol.

Unfortunately, thats what happens when I'm already angry in a state of mac rage. I'm usually better at anger management, but todays just been a bit wank to be honest, so apologies if I offended you.
