THN and The Lord of Rings Online - I need YOU!

As some of you may be aware, The Lord of the Rings online went Free to Play some time ago.

While I was away from WoW, I started looking around for some fresh MMOs to play. Ive been playing a few, but one I always come back to all the time is the Lord of the Rings online

It is a very atmospheric, musically wonderful and graphically immersive game that, in my opinion, is something THN should be involved with.
I am therefore making an attempt to set up a THN Kinship (Guild) on The Lord of the Rings online, and this post is to try and get some of you fine people involved.

So, what are the advantages to LoTRO, I hear you shouting at me. "Tell us Tingham. Divulge your wisdom unto us!", I hear you crying.

Firstly, as I have said above, it is a deeply immersive and atmospheric game.

Secondly, it obviously has an immensely popular backstory, and the online game doesnt just back it up and fill it in, it also adds to it in a very believeable way.

Thirdly, and I realise this may not appeal to everyone, it is a challenge. It is considerably harder than WoW or even Guild Wars.

Fourthly, and this could be taken a different way: It isnt as addictive as WoW. It has many of the same things that make you want to get back on and get playing
but you never get that sense of grinding something because you feel you should. Part of this is explained under turbine points below.

So I see your cry has changed. You are somewhat skeptical. I hear you saying "Is it really free to play Ting?!. Really?".

No. It isnt. You can play all the way to max level, raid, pvp , enjoy most of the game for free. Youll be poor and it will take ages, but you can.

To gain some things, such as expansion packs or the ability to auction items, you will have to aquire and spend "Turbine Points". Which is basically Real Money.

These come at a set cost of around 4 euros (£3.20 or so) for 500. To put this in perspective, 5 auction house slots costs 95, while all the expansions costs around 2500.
You can also become a VIP member and get everything, though I have not really looked into this yet.

Cruicially though, these Turbine Points can be earnt in game through Questing, or doing Tasks. Tasks are mostly "Brigand Slayer - kill 25 Blackwolds" etc, but are also of the ilk "COmplete 65 quests in Bree-land".
So you dont HAVE to spend money to get everything, if you had patience and time, you could slowly earn them. I found they mounted up as i went along, mostly.

In terms of gameplay, it is much like WoW, but a little more complex. Characters are far more customisable in terms both of appearance and of role and stats.
The talent system, where you earn "traits" through exploring, questing, or killing stuff, which you then put into trait slots, sounds rubbish but in fact works
very, very well indeed.

Im not going to go into detail here about gameplay, but if you have any questions just give me a poke.

I will, however, have a few examples of the classes, as at least one person has said they would like to know more:

1) Minstrel - A healer. Plays like a mixture of druid a priest, with some direct healing, and some heals which use combinations.
2) Guardian - What I play. The core tank, plays like a Mixture, in wow terms, of Paladin and Druid tanks.
3) Champion - In Wow terms, a fury or arms warrior, basically one of the core melee dpsers.

There is alot more variation between classes than there is in WoW, and that is one of the things that I found really appealed to me.

"So Tingham" i hear you cry with rapturous approval- "How do we get this game! Lead us, and verily we shall follow yonder".

The EU client is available to download at:
http://community.lotro-europe.com/full_client.php.

The easiest way is to make an account as the game is downloading, it is, of course, free.

You will find me on the server "Withywindle EU". Which is a pan-european server. My name, as ever, is Tingham.

Ill update this more tommorow to give clearer and more detailed information, but I hope I can persuade some of you to at least give it a go.
Recent patches have turned this sup par game into a superb and much under appreciated game with an absoloutely incredible community of friendly, helpful and mature players
in which I think a THN Kinship would slot like a hot dog into T-bones Shi-tzu (tee hee!).To begin with , we need 8 people to form a Kinship, and then we can go from there.

Happy gaming folks.

Edit : If Im not on and your trying to get hold of me, then either use in game mail, or PM here :)

Update: The LOTRO forums and game servers are down from 31st march for 48 hours or while they do some funky IT stuff! :P. Not 100% sure what it is, but it seems they are switching from Turbine to Codemasters servers.

Aye same here. I would love to give it a go. I dont know how to make money though if I cant use the auction house. Is personal trade viable or?

Right. I only see American servers in the launcher screen. However, there only seems to be ONE version of the client you can download and it didn't ask me there or anywhere else whether I'd like to play on the EU or NA servers. Perhaps the European servers will show up when they come back up? Or am I missing something, have I downloaded the 10gigs of WRONG client?

There always used to be two clients. You go to the US site you get the US client, and not once does it say "Stop! You're from the EU you muppet!". I know your pain, from personal experience of exactly this :p

Well, lotro-europe.com redirects to lotro.com, same with community.lotro-europe.com... Everything redirects me to lotro.com and there is just one download link, one client to rule them all, into darkness bind them. So unless it's because of the maintenance - which it shouldn't be, Ting said it's only forums and game servers and they would probably at least put up a notification or something - I'm at loss how should download the proper thing.

I got mucked about by it when i tried it out, so much so that i was quite bitter by the time i was able to play. But i persevered and gave it 24 hours. Wasn't too keen tbh, and went back to DDO.

Update :

Codemasters made and ran LOTRO for 4 years, they are now handing over to turbine inc.
This will make no difference at the moment, but it seems turbine are prepared to put more money into the game for further expansions and for server maintenance.

If you already have an account, then it will need transferring, if you dont then hold up.

Angelic : Best to wait untill everything is transferred then try again, if you still cant find the EU servers then ill do my best to get the link. The ability to transfer your account from Codemasters to Turbine should become available this evening.

Just my luck that exactly when I want to get some THN-ers onto the game, this happens. Bare with me folks.

Right, I did some more digging around and found this migration FAQ. It clears up any confusion one might have, I think:

3. I play on the EU service today. Do I need to do anything?
Yes. All current players of the LOTRO service operated by Codemasters will need to migrate their account to the new global service. This simple one-time process will allow current players to easily move game access and characters to the global service.
13. Will I need to download the US client to play after June 1?
No. When the servers come back up your existing client will patch up to the global version of the game. Once the patching process is complete and you have followed the migration instructions you will be able to log into the game normally.
14. Will the EU servers be merged into the US servers?
No. All existing servers will become part of the Turbine service. After patching your client all existing EU servers will appear in the launcher along with all of the current US servers. Players will then be able to create characters on any server they wish.

Since I created a Turbine account already and presumably downloaded the US client, it means I won't have to do anything, I'll just pick Withywindle global realm once the transfer is complete and the launcher patchs up. Good news, everyone!

Right now one can play on any US server, but not on any EU (soon to be Global) servers. That's quite unfortunate for me, as yesterday and today were my two designated days of respite between plunging head-first into pathology for the next 27 days straight.
However, I should be able to play the game even during that period, hopefully, even if only scarcely.

All in all, these problems made me rather excited about actually entering the game :)

One more thing, though. Ting, you said you play a Champion, a tanky character. Which other roles have already been filled, by whoever else is in the future THN Kinship? Naturally, I would primarily try to complement those, come server-restoration.

Actually I think I made a typo. I play a guardian, which is one of the tank classes.

As for the rest, well. Kinship wise I dont know.

I know Belf is going down the Melee road, probably with Champion , Captain or Burglar.

Obviously healers (Minstrels) (Rune Keepers) are always useful, but so are Hunters and Lore Keepers.

Tis up to you matey, I dont want you to try a minstrel first and have a crappy playing experience.

As the most fun, well...probably hunter or lore master frankly.

Also : I have only yet played the man starting area (Bree-land) and it is superb, but I believe alot of people like the Dwarf and Hobbit ones too.

Most likely they're migrating customer service as well - you're supposed to merge your account AFTER the migration, from what I gather. Hang in there, mate ;)

As you may have noticed, the servers are up!
I must say, the visuals are awesome :) Certainly not regretting having downloaded the hi-res pack!
My in-game name is Sheska, a Minstrel of Bree-land. I suck at killing things, big-time ^^ Currently level almost 8. I'll be away from the computer this weekend, back on Sunday evening. Very much looking forward to playing with you folks!

There is a couple of questions I have, mostly regarding the UI and combat flow. For instance, is there any way to increase the size of the buff/debuff icons? Being a buff-class I kinda need to keep track of those. Timers would help immensely as well... Not to mention some nifty tool to show me Ballad Tiers, although I guess you wouldn't know about that, not being a Minstrel ;)
