Torchlight

This game's pretty much a Diablo clone made by some people who worked for Blizz but left to start for themselves. I've just played the demo from Steam, and it plays quite nicely. Has anyone else tried this game and if so what's your opinion on it? If it's this much fun all the way and lasts for a while, I may buy it (it helps that it's cheap).

Diablo clone? Hmm, I'll check it out. You have no idea how much awesomeness Diablo brought upon my life.

Edit: Looked at some gameplay videos, looks like a more childish colorful version of Diablo. Nonetheless, I bet it can be great fun to play. But I'll be waiting for Blizzy to release Diablo III

Yeah I heard a few decent things about it but I'm in no position to be throwing money around at the minute. I'll wait 'til it drops a wee bit on one of the steam deals.

It's hardly about the story - 'tis a dungeon romp diablo clone :)

It is what it is, and I'm loving it (then again I love diablo)

Definitely worth the price..

OK i'll give you that diablo wasnt about the story, but diablo was multiplayer. Yes romping through dungeons in torchlight is fun but for a singleplayer dungeon romp a good story shouldnt be too much to ask.

I was mildly interested in buying this today and then I found out it has no co-op or multiplayer or anytihng, so I'm not going to bother now

[Review]: Torchlight

Note: This was a "midnight oil"-type review. Not easy to think when you are half asleep. So bear with me, folks!

The Demanding Gamer presents: Torchlight Review

Right.
So. I now have Torchlight.
So I will start off with asking you this: Ever wanted to play Diablo. But thought it was too hectic or hardcore of a game to be able to relax with?

Torchlight is the exact opposite.
Now that I have had a chance to properly test the game itself, I can safely say that it has a bit of an "upgraded" Diablo movement and style to the gameplay. But at the same time it is more relaxed and -fun- in the long run.

Torclight contains music inspired from the first two Diablo games.
The effects are simple, yet highly shiney. The game has a sort of cartoon'ish feel to it, without going overboard.

It is true that it does not have any MultiPlayer contents in any way, shape or form.
But I can safely say as one of the people who have come to find SinglePlayer games to be the height of boredome over the years(after having gone through over 1K of them*giggles*) that this is actually more fun that at first glance.
You do have gear. But in a fairly simple way.
You can gem weapons, armour, etc.
There is no large spell book. But you can learn up to four spells and cycle between two.
You can fill your pet's inventory and send it off to sell things for you while you are still running around in some dungeon.

It is hard to find pro vs con in the game since it carries itself well.

You have three classes to choose from:
Destroyer - You excel at melée combat and channel the power of your ancenstors to smite your foe (Tank-type character based more or less on the Barbarian class and the Paladin class)

Vanquisher - You are an excelent marksman and can learn to use traps and dibilitate your foes. (I have found this class to be a mix of Assassin, Amazon and Sorceress. Very fun to play this class)

Alchemist - You channel the powers of the Ember to attack from afar and and summon minions at your side. (To me, this appears to be an insane mix between Sorceress, Necromancer and Amazon in some ways)

The genders of each of the three classes are pre-determined, sadly.
Destroyer - Male (Looks like he can lift a bull with his hands)
Vanquisher - Female (Looks like a true huntress and ready to open fire)
Alchemist - Male (Skinny looking fella that looks as if he wants to kill everyone you know and throw your puppy down a well)

Gear change and appearance:
Whenever you change into some new shinies, it will adapt to your size and character type(I.E: Destroyer will NOT look like WoW's famous male Orc Shammies in a dress :p )
ALL gear will not change the way it looks however, since there are several types of each gear piece that merely carries different stats.
Whenever you get a new piece of gear that looks different from what you are wearing(even the icons will tell you a lot of what it looks like, BTW), the piece of gear will never break the visual style of the game. So you will not end up looking like something out of Transformers. :p

Specialties:
Yes. You can spec and there are three trees to choose from for each of the three classes you can play.
You can also kill named, rare and unique mobs to gain more fame(credibility with the townspeople). Enough fame will give you an extra skill point you can place in your spec tree

Questing:
Yes. There are quests. But you can do them whenever you feel like it. They are not all too tough and you can easilly do them as you kill other things in that area.

Pets:
Torchlight does not discriminate. All three hero classes have pets.
Now. For those wondering. There are two pets you can choose from, no matter which of the three classes you play.
Dog or cat.
The dog is a wolf.
The cat is a bobcat.

Yes. You can name the pet.

This game may be simple and still have some bugs. But as far as this type of game goes and as far as SinglePlayer games go. Torchlight gets Fae's seal of approval.
Rating in total: 4.3 / 5
------------------------------------------------------------------------

For those who still demand MultiPlayer. Word is out that there may be work in progress for another game, more or less based on Torchlight. This game will then be an MMO version with lots of content as time passes. Will it ever see the light of day? Time will tell. So kick down, Sparky! ;)

Its always the quiet ones... who use magic...

Glad this is getting good reviews as i'd like the developers to make as much money as possible from this so they have no excuse not to make another one.

Well. Word is officially out.
The creators of Torchlight (Which is actually our lovely original Diablo team with a few new additions to the crew) are raising money.
If enough people buy Torchlight, the project will be in full swing for the new game!

That's right, folks. We are talking MultiPlayer made of pure awesome here.
More funds=more time and resources for the new game.

Uhm, so what they're telling us is:

We release a half finished game which is like middle class, but only if you buy that we release ANOTHER game, which you will buy for, at least, the same amount of money, which then will be good.

Sounds like Valve L4D Marketing to me ...

Torchlight is $20. That makes the comparison to L4D pretty weak...

As they didn't have the resources to make the MMO that they wanted to, making a single player only game, that not only gives people an idea what they are aiming for, but also gives people an awesome game to play for a reasonable amount of money, seems like a good idea, if not only sensible, idea to me. Make a game, and use the profits to make another game based on it, or don't make either game.

Don't look at it like "it's missing" half the game, think of it as a separate game. If you think of it as "missing" multiplayer, then not only are you saying all games HAVE to have multiplayer as well as singleplayer, you're gonna get upset :)

Really, for ~£10, it's a good game. If they were charging £30 + £8/month for the single player only version, then yeah, they would be "missing" the multiplayer bit :)

Re: [Reply]: Torchlight

I find the game quite addictive I must admit and I am a bit of a misanthrope so it being multiplayer-less doesn't bother me all that much! ;)

Also, I got the game for like £3 anyway so it's been well worth the price. ^^
