The Demanding Gamer presents: Torchlight Review
Right.
So. I now have Torchlight.
So I will start off with asking you this: Ever wanted to play Diablo. But thought it was too hectic or hardcore of a game to be able to relax with?
Torchlight is the exact opposite.
Now that I have had a chance to properly test the game itself, I can safely say that it has a bit of an "upgraded" Diablo movement and style to the gameplay. But at the same time it is more relaxed and -fun- in the long run.
Torclight contains music inspired from the first two Diablo games.
The effects are simple, yet highly shiney. The game has a sort of cartoon'ish feel to it, without going overboard.
It is true that it does not have any MultiPlayer contents in any way, shape or form.
But I can safely say as one of the people who have come to find SinglePlayer games to be the height of boredome over the years(after having gone through over 1K of them*giggles*) that this is actually more fun that at first glance.
You do have gear. But in a fairly simple way.
You can gem weapons, armour, etc.
There is no large spell book. But you can learn up to four spells and cycle between two.
You can fill your pet's inventory and send it off to sell things for you while you are still running around in some dungeon.
It is hard to find pro vs con in the game since it carries itself well.
You have three classes to choose from:
Destroyer - You excel at melée combat and channel the power of your ancenstors to smite your foe (Tank-type character based more or less on the Barbarian class and the Paladin class)
Vanquisher - You are an excelent marksman and can learn to use traps and dibilitate your foes. (I have found this class to be a mix of Assassin, Amazon and Sorceress. Very fun to play this class)
Alchemist - You channel the powers of the Ember to attack from afar and and summon minions at your side. (To me, this appears to be an insane mix between Sorceress, Necromancer and Amazon in some ways)
The genders of each of the three classes are pre-determined, sadly.
Destroyer -
Male (Looks like he can lift a bull with his hands)
Vanquisher -
Female (Looks like a true huntress and ready to open fire)
Alchemist -
Male (Skinny looking fella that looks as if he wants to kill everyone you know and throw your puppy down a well)
Gear change and appearance:
Whenever you change into some new shinies, it will adapt to your size and character type(I.E: Destroyer will NOT look like WoW's famous male Orc Shammies in a dress
)
ALL gear will not change the way it looks however, since there are several types of each gear piece that merely carries different stats.
Whenever you get a new piece of gear that looks different from what you are wearing(even the icons will tell you a lot of what it looks like, BTW), the piece of gear will never break the visual style of the game. So you will not end up looking like something out of Transformers.
Specialties:
Yes. You can spec and there are three trees to choose from for each of the three classes you can play.
You can also kill named, rare and unique mobs to gain more fame(credibility with the townspeople). Enough fame will give you an extra skill point you can place in your spec tree
Questing:
Yes. There are quests. But you can do them whenever you feel like it. They are not all too tough and you can easilly do them as you kill other things in that area.
Pets:
Torchlight does not discriminate. All three hero classes have pets.
Now. For those wondering. There are two pets you can choose from, no matter which of the three classes you play.
Dog or cat.
The dog is a wolf.
The cat is a bobcat.
Yes. You can name the pet.
This game may be simple and still have some bugs. But as far as this type of game goes and as far as SinglePlayer games go. Torchlight gets
Fae's seal of approval.
Rating in total:
4.3 / 5

For those who still demand MultiPlayer. Word is out that there may be work in progress for another game, more or less based on Torchlight. This game will then be an MMO version with lots of content as time passes. Will it ever see the light of day? Time will tell. So kick down, Sparky!
