Just curious if any of you guys have been watching Boys and Girls Alone on Channel 4 or 4OD?
If you haven't I'd heartily recommend it. The premise is there are 10 boys and 10 girls ranging from ages 8 to 11. The boys are put in one village and the girls in a separate one. There is no adult supervision (except for adult chaperones who will step in if a child is in danger but otherwise do not intervene) and the kids are there for 2 weeks.
I only started watching it out of sheer boredom but I'm really glad I have. In 2 episodes, which spans 6 days, the boys have went through dictatorship, several coups and seem to have landed at democracy for the moment. The girls have stayed pretty much entirely in a dictatorship where the two strongest girls lead, although that seems to have collapsed.
It's incredibly entertaining to watch how the two groups deal with money, food supply and bullying. You can really see who the leaders are and it's interesting to see how the handle situations and, indeed, the naivety of their subordinates as one child suggests execution as punishment for breaking the food rationing system.
I've really enjoyed watching it and wondering whether these things have come about by nature or nurture and some parts are gob smacking and hilarious. One of the lines from a girl in the second episode is absolutely brilliant. I've never heard a more philosophical line from a child in my life. It could rival Nietzsche!
So has anyone else been watching it, and if so, what did you think?
