Using Your Laptop to Connect to Xbox Live

Hey all,

After a frustrating morning of trial and error with various guides ive managed to connect to Xbox Live using my Laptops Wireless connection. So i thought id share the way i did it in case theres anyone out there who didnt know how to and wants to try it out:

1. Connect your Xbox to your Latop with an ethernet cable (the one supplied with the xbox will do)
2. In Windows click Start -> Connect to -> Show all Connections
3. Check to make sure the LAN connection (connection between your laptop and xbox) is coming up as Connected.
4. Select both the Local Area Network and 1394 Connection and Right Click and choose Create Bridge. (takes a couple of seconds)
5. Right click on your Wireless connection and go to Properties. Click the Advanced tab and tick the "Allow other network users to connect..." box and make sure the "Allow users to control..." box is UNchecked. Click OK.
6. Go to System Settings and Test Xbox live connection.
7. HOPEFULLY it works.

This is the work around that i did based on a few different methods (one tried bridging between the LAN and wireless for me that didnt work. One didnt bridge at all and just enabled Sharing, didnt work for me either) Hopefully this helps any fellow computer skills impaired gamers to be able to wirelessly connect your xbox without the need to shell out for an adapter.

you realise that the 1394 connection is your firewire port, and will have precisely no effect whatsoever? :p

What you need to have set up is internet connection sharing in Windows, which, in a round about way, you've managed :)

Ahhh well i suppose thats the Chuchu way, unnecessarily convoluted :P the only reason why i tried bridging the two (out of ignorance) was because just allowing connection sharing alone didnt want to work :/ Although now i dont want to tinker with it since its working and i have the uncanny ability to ruin things by tinkering with them :p

You can also skip the middleman.

Get an xbox controller (not neccessary but it is less coding). Get visual studio 2010 (free from Microsoft) and XNA 4.

You can get to gamer services using the premapped middle button directly without using the XBOX to get onto live. This will only access your data ofcourse, but means u can make edits in a small GUI (which can be made in five minutes with any C# tutorial). All of the gamer services options will load within this empty GUI, as the libraries are packaged with XNA.

This will not allow direct access to gaming online via your XBOX, but is an alternative for those wanting to experiment, and who knows, it could facilitate a full connection more simply, if experimented with (which is outside of my current use of XNA).
