[Tech] Valve Games Performing Poorly

All of my Valve games are performing horrendously. When I join a mulitplayer game models as if it's 2 FPS, which it's not. I can move at full speed with no problems while all other models, AI or not, don't. It's not due to my ping as it remains constant below 100. This happens on all Valve games (Half-Life 2 DM, DoD:S, CSS etc.) and even mods (Zombie Panic! Source and Synergy).

This only happened recently as I'd been playing them fine a few weeks ago. I'm not sure what I could've done to do this or, more importantly what I can do to rectify it. Any ideas?

Have you disabled your AV/Firewall. I installed NOD32 on my machine a while ago and It's cause havoc with online play. I took it off straight after :p.

Do they work fine on SP? Disabling your AV/Firewall is always a good start if it's only online play that affects them. It could be that some port is causing mahem.

There have been Windows updates in the past few weeks. I'm not sure what was on the list but if you check there might be something pertinent in that lot.

Had to reset my rates by typing "rate 30000" into the console.

Problem solved! :D

any idea waht this command actually does?

And what console do you type it into? Is there a generic steam console you can put it into or do you have to do it on a per-game basis?

I've only tried it in one game, but seeing as it happened simultaneously I'm guessing once. I'll let you know if otherwise.

As to what it does, I've no idea. :p
