Want your own little piece of TheHavenNet ?

If we were to give you a little space for web/ftp and <somedomain>.thehavennet.org.uk what would you do with it ?

If we were to allow you to run a game on our games server what would be it be and who would you get to help you ?

The proviso for both is that they have to give something to the community (that is what we are after all). So a game has to be something you can get people interested in and a site has to have a community angle.

Anyway get posting and you may just get the opportunity and resources you need.

Web space - Id probably try and set up some kind of review hub, probably mostly for consoles :) because despite the fact Ive been putting up some X360 reviews and news, a bit more from the rest of the console world would be fair play. Another idea could be a retro game archive (not to host the game itself, thatd be cheating) but just assome kind of index of age-old games. Ive been looking for a retro game index for some time, and still havent found one good enough.

Game - Call of Duty 1. Kind of starting to disappear off the scene because of BiA and CoD2/3, but Id say still one of the best multiplayer games out there. A new server would be supremely decent, because some of the better CoD1 servers have migrated on to the later games so there seems to be a bit of a lack at the moment. Id get my brother to help me as he has had experience with CoD1 server admin rights and all that before.

By the way, Id happily pay a small fee to have my own space and perhaps a server. Id hate to be a freeloader.

Web space - A place to stick bits of code I make, to allow others to use and abuse it. This would be anything from Java and C++, OpenGL, scripts (Javascript, perl, etc), and depending what the server runs, maybe some JSP pages with servlets :D

Game - Serious Sam 1&2 dedicated servers :D Serious Sam Coop is too much fun, and others need to be shown it! And then (when it's released) Defcon dedicated server!

Well, I presently have a domain, but I can forsee it being shut down soon as I've 'missed' some payments. I myself would use it to host things others wouldn't let you. As in I could always go to imageshack and let them host a few images, but they have restrictions, and not forgetting the fact that they don't host .exe's I make when I take the odd dander into a bit of C programming.

For example: PieQuest anyone?

You can only answer in yes or no with no capital letters

(Yar, it was made by me)

Hmm a chance to be more consructive with my online persona.

I think if I were to have my own domain it would have to be design@thehavennet. A place to showcase graphics, models, artwork, videos and build an online portfolio. It would also be a place to throw ideas around, gain qualitative and quantitative research and feedback from the community.

Having it set-up correctly it would allow for community projects to be started allowing anything from group graphic design to (perhaps rather adventurous here) creating games mods etc...

Obviously the server requirements would follow hand in hand what was being created by a design team at any given period. But if it were to be supporting a game then it would have to be flexible so that I could change it to suit the flavour of the month.

Hope that helps.

By the way haven the design idea is something that I've been thinking about for along time and would like to try and implement quite seriously. I'd also happily pay for the hosting and help with set-up.

I like the concept and I think it could work very altruistically with everything else that we do here. Given the concept of code.thehavennet.org.uk that is evolving around elDiablo's post I think the two could complement each other as well as both standing on their own where needed.

Obviously the server requirements would follow hand in hand what was being created by a design team at any given period. But if it were to be supporting a game then it would have to be flexible so that I could change it to suit the flavour of the month.

You'd be given the access you needed to make changes and allow you the freedom to make it succeed. We've plenty in the way of server resources, the rest is down to learning a little bit about how best to use them.

By the way haven the design idea is something that I've been thinking about for along time and would like to try and implement quite seriously. I'd also happily pay for the hosting and help with set-up.

If you're looking for something that is supported i.e. you get a guaranteed level of support and that is for personal use then come talk to me when I've got my havenhosting hat on.

However if its a project relating to a community effort then you obviously get limited support (as much as goodwill and time allow) but likewise you get the resources for free (its a community resource and you are doing something for the community after all).

Either/Both are good and can be handled. Come chat to me or pm me a time you're likely to be around and we can talk on teamspeak.

Some nice ideas in there - don't let this one drop and keep motivated and we'll make it happen!

I like the concept of code.thehavennet.org.uk. I hope its what elDiablo was envisaging ? i.e. let us know if we're on the right track. But its something I would definately dip into when I'm wearing my php hat (or when I'm wearing my "learning python" hat).

Nice ideas - definately run with it for now - flesh out what you'd want in terms of web resources and web tech to support it i.e. forums/wiki etc.

Then come talk to me or post up on the development mailing list and we'll take it forwards.

code.thn sounds uber. Didn't really think of it as a bigger section when I posted, but now Big_D and yourself have mentioned, sounds good! I would love to see a dropbox type affair that allows users to add their own bits of code, and a way to browse them (with example outputs on web-based code)... Would be pretty nice actually, and I'd love to help set it up if you need it.

Erm, I mean, yes, that's exactly what I was thinking! Praise me!

Me and Nanor would like another piece of THN, please. :)

wow.thehavennet.org.uk

Purpose: to host additional useful applications to support the WoW community, including PHP application that shows what is in the bank, who is in the guild, and perhaps even gathers and displays some cool stats (via mods into WoW) of who killed the most Alliance this week and so on.

Needed: Apache hosting with PHP (4 or 5), mySQL (tiny storage requirement) with table writing access, and GD2 enabled. FTP might be needed for uploads, but not sure yet -- might be built in.

Not got the specific app figured yet, but Nanor will let me/us know what looks best. I'll do the setup and any integration with THN Games.

Please can we have?
