Warning, Apparent new phishing scams

First as it may be clear by now i have stopped playing wow. Mainly because my internet connection is so shit that 90% of the time it was unplayable, as a result i now have 0 will to play this game.

However on the 27th of November i received an email from 'Newsletter@email.blizzard.com' [apparently official blizz emails only end in adressed from '@blizzard.com'] in conjunction with wow's 5th anniversary and these night elf Mohawk grenades saying that i could reactivate my account for 7 days.

When i clicked the link it took me to a log in page for battle net, which even asked for my authenticator [My authenticator being the reason i didn't care if it was a scam because that should keep it safe]. upon 'logging in' it claimed i had no wow account bound to that battle net account.

I emailed blizzard support to confirm and they claim its yet another scam mail hoping to get people to either give up their details or bind their game accounts to the wrong battle net accounts.

Thoughts id post here to warn about it just in case, though id like to take this opportunity to have a bit of a rant about it. Who ever sent this email knew my email address clearly, they referred to my by first and last name, and knew that my account was inactive.

They got this information about me from somewhere, and was enough to make an email that was incredibly convincing, enough so to contact blizzard and ask if it was legit, thankfully I'm a little paranoid so i didn't fall for it. But i have to ask the question 'How did they get this information about me, and what the fuck a blizzard doing with our details?'

Saying that i only got a response to my ticket today, so it was nice to see how urgent they were with it.

Weird, how the hell did they get your 1st and 2nd name?
And I wonder how far the "scammers" are willing to go to get account information?

I read a blue response on the forums in the past week that said that Blizzard were, however, sending these emails out and that they are legit. (Can't find the link though :/)

Looks like the scammers may have jumped on the bandwagon though so be careful

Well this is where i'm getting confused. Because as i said the email looks 100% official and contains a lot of just random info about me that only blizz themselves should know. But when i clicked the link and logged into my battlenet account through it it claimed that there was no warcraft account linked to that battlenet account, but i could navigate to other pages of battlenet and it would be my legit account for it.

The email i got back from talking to customer support claimed it was a scam email. But then again i have quickly come to not care for blizzards support they are fucking shit.

Every time i have had a problem related to WoW that i have contacted support about they seem to just skim read my issues, generalize it into one of 3 catagories and spam me with links to support pages which have nothing to do with my original problem.

Most often this is how my conversations with them have gone:

"Dear blizzard i have an issue,

*Description of problem*

So far i have looked up this issue and i have attempted suggested solutions X, Y and Z and none have worked."

Response is usually:

"This is a common issue, try the following solutions:

*insert links to the exact same support pages i mentioned*"

I must say I am incredibly disappointed with their customer support from my experiences. And if this is a legit email i got that isn't working then it just further increases that feeling. TBH in not fussed if i miss out on these 7 free days, just that id be missing out because the support team is run by monkeys and refuse to actually read the support tickets they receive

*Note*

Having tried to log into the wow forums as well i think the issue is that if your wow account on your battle-net account is frozen/inactive, like mine is, then for wow related things like the forums it thinks you don't have one.

I.E. it seems to claim my 7 days of free game play i would have to have an active WoW account in the first place which is a load of bull

Why would you log in if you thought is was a scam?? You're 100% sure it was the proper battle.net site?

yea remember you can't use the WoW forums if you do not have an active WoW account

battle.net may have been telling you that you do not have an active WoW account, rather than you do not have a WoW account at all.

I have an authenticator linked to my account, even if they knew my log in details and password, they would also need to know the exact same random number algorithm my specific authenticator uses to log in, as that number changes every 30 seconds, plus I'm fairly sure it was legit. it does seem more likely the response i got from the support service was answered by a moron.

Effectively the authenticator is an incredibly powerful security feature, and they would actually need the device i have on my key ring to log into my account. If they some how cracked it, well id demand my money back for the authenticator along with compensation

well, knowing your account login and password, there is still a 2 (or maybe 3) in a million chance they could guess it...

but yea, while "unhackable" is never true, "very very secure" is certainly the case here.

So if I were to, say, make a fake site that skims your login details and asks for your authenticator code, and then use them immediately... Man-in-the-middle attacks are nothing new, and are in fact quite common in the account-cracking business.

As secure as your setup may be, if you go entering your info into sites even when you have a hunch there's something fishy going on, you will likely end up getting burned.

Never go to those websites unless you can also find a link to them from the official blizzard website.

Unless you want to support the goldselling community ofcourse, then go on and go there :)
