What am I missing?

I am both overjoyed and confused by my recent respec of my level 80 rogue "fluffball".

I've changed from combat swords spec to a muti-pvp spec 41/5/25 and even in PvE, my damage has doubled if not tripled. I'm taking down mobs in seconds.

I've swapped from my slow blue mainhand and purple fast offhand, to 2 cheap librarian paper cutters (1.3 speed daggers, blue).

Cheaper weapons + respec = insanely more damage. Nice, but confusing.

Yet when I googled last night I coudln't see anyone anywhere mention that combat is gimped. However from my observation it is gimped, terribly terribly underpowered vs dagger build using ambush/mutilate/kidney shot/backstabs (not to mention evisc which is now critting for about 4-5k, miles more than it did with a sword?!).

So to summise; energy regen: improved. Damage: much improved. Survivability: improved.

What am I missing about combat spec? Was I just doing it wrong? I was using CS opener (or garotte), Sinister strikes, Slice n Dice, eviscerate. But it always felt I was merely chipping away at mobs. You'd argue it was better for multiple targets with 2 abilities that hit more than one target but I prefer using cc and taking down single targets in a sickeningly small amount of time. It's just better.

I think what I'm trying to ask is; for a DPS class, why have more than one talent tree if one spec is so mind-bogglingly better than the other? And I'm kinda sad I didn't discover this sooner whilst I was levelling.. :p

I am not at all surprised about what you describe here - but Mutilate is not "mind-bogglingly better" than combat. Simply put, combat is all about sustained DPS, and your rotation clearly shows why.

Mutilate, on the other hand, can only compete with combat in longer fights due to Focused Attacks's insane energy regeneration. The true strength of Mutilate is high burst and poison damage.

Overkill
is brutal when fighting regular mobs, hence your ability to nuke them within seconds.

Plus, you use the fastest daggers that are currently in the game. Poison loves fast daggers. When you look at your damage sources using Recount or the like, you will find that about 30% of your total damage is poison damage, which cares only about your attack power and your weapon speed (yes, and spellcrit, but let's ignore that here for the sake of the argument). By using the LPC you have maxed out the latter. A poison-heavy spec is not reliant on gear level as much as combat is.

Meh finally I thought, a philosophical conundrum "what am I missing". My initial thoughts were two fold - either the answer or the question. But then I delved deeper and pondered perhaps the reason is the answer.

But than again I believe I'm in the wrong time and place with the wrong question so I'll leave you in peace :)

As combat, a good portion (35%+) of your dps is from white damage.

I doubt the fast dagger thing, it might be better in theory, but I use 2 slow daggers

Fast daggers = more poison and energy, Slow daggers however are viable in pvp and they burst way higher.

in WOTLK combat rogue rotation on boss fights should always be as follows.

1. SS to 1pt
2. SnD
3. SS to 5pt
4. SnD
5. SS to 5pt
6. Rupture
7. SS to 3-5pt (Dependant of uptime of SnD)
8. Eviscerate
9. Go back to step 3, Rinse, Repeat

For step's 7 & 8 eviscerate either when at 5pts or 12 seconds are left on SnD

Max DPS rotation possible for combat spec rogue

What's best pvp dagger for mainhand/muti then?

One that I can get solo.

More or less was my rotation on the odd occasion I handled elites. Killing regular mobs was very slow though comapred to what I'm getting now (and pvp I could barely kill anyone).

Then again I only hd 109 dps mainhand (hard to find better if using swords).
