What is the world coming too?

I am a regular visitor of the BBC news headlines online and I was browsing today and noticed the headlines which included numerous headlines on the crises in the middle east, African civil wars, muders, race riots, and others that are similar so what is the world coming to? I know that these kind of headlines are on all the time but thats the point, it makes you think what a messed up world we live in. Your thoughts?

Heh. It took you this long to realise how badly the world was messed up? :p

I don't think there's anything we can do. We can lessen the fighting. I mean, we can distribute aid to third world countries which may stop certain civil wars, and we can educate our children to treat eachother with respect that we all deserve, thus reducing race riots.

On the other hand, there will always be people that dislike eachother. For example, you can't truly say you get on with every single person on your street. Maybe you do, but not everyone does. Now say each house is a country. Your next door neighbour has done something to annoy you, and so you do something to annoy him and this spirals out of control and before you know it you're throwing nuclear bombs over the fence to eachother.

It's a sad fact, we are human, making world peace, impossible.

Nanor, i think you have to believe that there is something you can do. How can the world ever improve when nobody believes in it? The people that make a difference believe. Everyone should, it doesn't matter if you can change it or not, if you don't it's a self fulfilling prophecy. I hate negativity.

I'm quite certain world peace is possible, but it will take a long time to get there. We're definitely on the way despite everything.

D_I: So is that the meaning of life according to you?

Essentially everyone's life is to live, breed and die, everything else we do is pretty much just passing the time!

Hmm, if living, breeding and dying would be all i did, i wouldn't be satisfied, not unless i could be a porn star for the beeding part :D

I think the question of what the meaning of life really is is better phrased like this: When will your life be meaningful?

Humans only kid themselves that their lives are meaningful, essentially everything we do is either to try and live as long as possible or to breed! It's the way with all animals!

Pest, I really can't see world peace. I can't see a day where the news will report no deaths, and as I write I'm watching riots in.. well, somewhere..

In short:
What is the world coming to?

An end.

I'm not gothic I just see things as they really are! What do you think makes someone's life meaningful then?

In historic perspective the world is definitely going forward. Scientific advances cull diseases and increase food supplies, communications advances, the global economy, increases in wealth and widespread air traffic have all made the world smaller.

Initiatives like the UN, EU and NATO are unprecendented and succesful.

Sure plenty of wrongs, suffering, challenges and dangers remain, but personally i see improvement. You see bad things in the news, but much is now reported about which simply wasn't in the past, that's a good thing. In the past it was worse and you would have been less aware.

D_I: Seeing things as they really are? You know the joke is that all pessimists call themselves realists. :)
What makes life meaningful? Achievement, personal and beyond. Being happy is an achievement, having a family is, improving the world is. It is our duty to ensure the world is a better place when we leave it, compared to when we entered it, only with that mentality can mankind persist in a worthwile way.

For starters having a family is the same as breeding and we try to make the world a better place so that we and our offspring can survive for as long as possible! I don't spend my entire day looking at everything pessimistically and thinking the world is a shit point and there's no point living i just don't think there's any point trying to make out like there is more to life than living and reproducing! and battlefield 2142 but that goes without saying!

Then I'd be totally scuppered, by that definition, by fully intending to never have children.

Unless, of course, you cared to expand on the "living" bit, which is what I feel it's all about.

I feel that life is more than the dismal adage "life's a bitch, then you marry one, then you die" or even "live, breed, die". One singular advantage we have, as a civilisation, over other animals is that we can invent and build things that stand apart and outside of us: be they modes of thought and abstract concepts or physical and practical things. Some of these things last for decades, others for centuries, yet others for millenia. That which I do today can affect tomorrow and, in fact, could potentially affect everyone's tomorrow.

So, perhaps that would be a point in living: to make a better tomorrow for everyone.

Now, if only we could agree on what "better" is...

Ok, so essentially the only point of life is to live. People have children to pass their genes on (essentially a part of them lives on forever). People who want to create something that lasts forever (or a long time) and want to be remembered are trying to live on after they die.

Not really. As one of those people, I just happen to care what happens later. After all, someone else happened to care about that too, somewhere before me. If nothing else, I'm returning the favour. Once I'm dead, I'm dead. My capacity for caring after that point I expect may be diminished somewhat... or maybe it won't, which is another interesting thing I consider from time to time.

I think I'd agree with "the point to life is to live" but "to live" is as complex and varied as life itself. The mere words fail to carry the significance of the opportunity offered by living. Each of us has some form of opportunity through living. It's up to you what you make of it. I won't even try to claim that somehow we can all do the same things, but we can all do something, I feel.

Fair enough, i was only giving a personal description. :)

Ronin, have you ever heard of VHEMT, or the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement?

I hadn't. But now I have. Thanks Pest! :)

I sense VHEMT and I have some opinions in common, though our line of reasoning was different to the same end.
