Yea, this has been in construction for months now.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

The day I take scientific advice from the Sun is the a Large Hadron Collider destroys the world. ;)

Wikipedia says "The consensus in the scientific community is that experiments at the LHC present no danger and that there is no reason for concern". World rejoices.

There is more chance of another galaxy randomly colliding into ours and destroying us, than there is of the LHC creating something that could destroy us. Now, I dont know about you guys, but I dont wake up each morning screaming because another galaxy could wipe us out.

Its like them doing a story saying "You could win the lottery 10 times in a row!". Well yes, there is a chance of doing so (1 in 13,983,816^10) but its not likely, and anyone that then goes out and buys a ticket just in case is an idiot. Same with this; its possibly dangerous, but tbh, its just media scaremongering.

*sigh*

Wikipedia said:
The collider is currently undergoing commissioning while being cooled down to its final operating temperature of approximately 1.9 K (−271.25 °C). Initial particle beam injections were successfully carried out on 8-11 August 2008, the first attempt to circulate a beam through the entire LHC is scheduled for 10 September 2008, and the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled, on 21 October 2008.

I wish people would realise that on September the 10th, a test which has been done THOUSANDS of times before (and isn't even doing anything... they are just circulating a beam) is happening. The REALLY scary shit is on October 21th, which is well after my release party, so I don't care! \o/

Edit - By the way, this was a dig at all the "journalists" over at "newspapers" like The Sun, not anyone in this thread :)

I'm not worried about us ending the world with high-energy collisions; that's just sensationalist idiocy.

I do amuse myself with the thought that this is the sort of thing Black Mesa would get involved with, though... ;)

"It's those idiots in Sector C again, always pushing their equipment too hard..." :p

As elD says, even if there was cause for panic, it wouldn't be on Wednesday! Besides, anyone who's read HHGTG knows that the world will end on a Thursday! :)

Muhahahhhahahaha finally my evil master plan comes into its own. This is no LHC, this is a fully armed BATTLE STAR.

*runs off cackling*

Who needs a Death Star when you can have a DEATH STA... erm, this?! Which, interesting, is more of a Death Star.

I read this as well. I did wonder why everyone was so scared about the previous test. It was just someone firing a beam one way, then the other, around the LHC. Its when they start smacking the things into each other (still to come) that possibility for end of the world could be.

I'll make sure I make the most of freshers week then ;-) Find me some fresh meat..... *tries to think of what thats a quote from*

And nanor, the day I take facts from someone quoting wikipedia will be the day the LHC destroys the world ;-)

I heard on the news today that apparently there is a fault with some of the magnets overheating which has caused a potential 2 month delay while it is investigated...
