With high quality polls like this, is it any wonder people give stupid answers? Shit in, shit out.

Oh Panda. I think you may have had a slight sense of humour failure.
Really, with most forum polls, if you don't answer yes, then you're down as a no. That sort of poll (you linked to) is pointless having a "No" answer so why not have two ways to say "Yes" in an amusing way - obviously I'm using "amusing" in the broad sense and not necessarily specific in this case.*

Also, this is the first thing that popped into my head when I saw bob's shoutbox message. Just did it for the giggles :)

*only jokin Wol ;)

Not sure if I've missed your meaning. You're saying having a signup list to an event is "shit"? Or are you just complaining that you don't have the opportunity to voice that you're not doing something?

Just I'm writing a signup system for i46 at the moment, so my design for the system may be a bit off if I have to include a "I don't want to do something" option for a signup list. Would be nice to get your thoughts on it :)

Hey, :)

 No, don't do that.

However, do add an option for "My name is Earl!"... :D

Cheers,

On a slightly serious note:

Good Poll Design for vBulletin

While you might not care so much about the negative results of a poll (i.e. I won't be showing up), vBulletin is irritating in that if you're interested in the results but can't pick an option you have an extra button click every time you want to view the results. Fine, you might say, what's in just a button click? It's good UI principle, however, to keep button clicks to a minimum where you can. So...

Always include a "no vote, just want to see the results" style option and you'll help work around an annoyance in vBulletin and get a sense of general visibility of your poll. I tend to make these "no vote" options fairly ridiculous just for kicks but simply "Just want to see the results..." can work.

Takes a few extra seconds for the poll creator but saves all "just interested" users an extra click every time they want to view the results.

Back to your previous squirrels...

I'm saying that having a 'poll' where only one answer is allowed, 'yes', or 'yes' is incredibly poor form.

If the only answers you're interested in are yes', then there's no point having a poll, you might as well just have a sign up thread.

apart from that it gives you a concise list with a count rather than trawling through posts.

I'm very much with Wol on this one. You can create an event, for the most part people tend to miss those or just not bother signing up. And Signup threads are a ball ache as you have to go through and add everyone up.

Yeah I never quite got the nosey attitude of those people who aren't coming but want to religiously check back every so often to see who's signed up, but without having that extra click even though they've already clicked once to get to the thread and their hand will still be on the mouse....

I don't include a negative option, because for the intended audience, it's not required. Personally I find those who just go around seeing who's signed up for things without actually going to them themselves, slightly creepy.

But thats just my opinion.

I'm also with wol on this one. In a sign up thread with a pol you can very quickly determine who was interested without having to read all of the extra information. The only other way to handle this is to create two threads, a signup and a discussion and a) THN doesn't have the disciple to use the two threads the right way and b) thats alot more effort for something as simple as 'who wants to play the ship sometime soon'

If you're posting here, your audience is THN. That you're targetting a small portion of THN is fine, but the entire audience remains THN regardless. Hence the small extra consideration.

Well, there's more to it than that.

Keep in mind that vBulletin will flag a thread as new whenever anyone answers a poll. Thus, if the board is telling me that there's new stuff, I at least want to see what that stuff is.

So, it's not creepy voyeurism so much as being a slave to those bold subject lines... :D

Considering I only put this here as a joke due to waterproofbob's comment in the shoutbox, this thread has taken an unforeseen turn down Serious Street :p

But, as I'm here, I'm in with the "no need for a no" camp for "are you interested in this..." type polls. So what if I have to click an extra link to see who has answered if I haven't yet, it's no biggie really.

By the way, did you know that the fastest spinning pulsar is named Ter5ad. It spins 716 times a second and is believed to be no more than 16 kilometres across. This means that if you are standing on the equator you would be travelling at approximately 129,575,952 kph (or 80,337,090 mph). At these speeds it would take you a little over a second to travel the circumference of the Earth*.

* rough maths is rough and I think I got them roughly right. Huung will tell me if I'm wrong, I'm sure :)

No, I understand your thoughts, I'm just asking people to do it differently. Your three seconds done once saves everyone else a half second every time. Okay, sure, that's pretty small, but it's a good basic principle that helps others at very little cost to you.
