Why are tankers drivers threatening to strike anyway?

If, like me, you didn't know for sure... here's a short film made by the Unite union.

Haha, that video is terrible propaganda, as expected from Unite.

If you don't think this is about pay, you must be dreaming, why else would they mention it? Everyone is losing their final salary pensions, and everyone is upset about it.

They talk about how the oil majors are pulling out of distribution - So why are they talking about their profits? It's any business' right to divest themselves of parts they don't think are profitable.

They discuss how health and safety standards are slipping because independent contractors are being used to transport fuel and supermarkets are putting pressure on deliveries - How is this the oil companies' fault? They've already stated, that these companies are divesting their distribution interests.

Do you know who else unite represents? http://www.unitetheunion.org/sectors/food_drink__tobacco.aspx
Workers at the very supermarkets they are decrying. You'd think that if they were that concerned about the actions of supermarkets pushing the envelope, they'd organise action on that end too.

Do you know how much these guys are earning for driving a lorry in a safe manner?

The numbers being bandied around are an average of £45,000 a year.

Which I think, if true is a very fair price for, on one hand, driving a truck, but on the other hand, driving a truck that if something goes wrong, is a bomb.

They talk about driving oil tankers being one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, well, do you know what's far FAR more dangerous? Actually extracting and processing hydrocarbons and minerals. Having worked for a major mining company, I can definitely say these types companies are FULLY aware of health and safety, and are so H+S conscious, that it actually becomes very very frustrating. I was once warned to hold a hand rail walking down a shallow, wide set of stairs.

Just total bollocks propaganda.
