Why Does My Computer Hate BF2?

So I recently got a new computer and was ecstatic at the thought of being able to play 64 player maps without and graphical chug. Previously, I would play Battlefield 2 on low with a GeForce 6600, AMD Athlon 2100+ 1.7GhZ and 1.7Gig of RAM and be able to play 32 player maps OK, but 64 player maps where impossible and I couldn't play because of my low FPS.

My new computer is a GeForce 7600 GS, Intel Celeron D 3.2GhZ and 1.5Gig of RAM. 32 player maps are noticibly better but 64 player maps are still impossible to play, I'm getting about 15 FPS! I've got the latest drivers for everything but it still doesn't run.

What can I do to increase my FPS? :(

Turn ze grafix down.

One thing you haven't mentioned is the amount of memory in both your old and your new grafix cards... if they are similar then tbh I don't think there will be a large noticable jump in performance of those cards.

Just make sure that nothing is running in the background and things should be ok :)

GeForce 7600 GS

Is apparently worse than well, everything :P

Try 7900 gt.

I run amd singlecore 2.647 Ghz, with nvidia 7800 GT, i can play at 1600x1200@100hz(for the last 18months), all gfx medium with view distance full and geometry low and AA off 60-80 fps, anyway my point is that your new gfx card sucks.

Obviously you wouldnt jsut go and buy my random price checks, but you can be sure, and ive heard bad things, that any GS sucks, the 7900 gs is worse than the 7800 gt for example.

Hrm. That's not fun. I was under the impression GS stood for Great Speed now I understand it's Ghey Suxxor. Oh well, at least I have my humour to entertain me..

Oh and just to clarify, was my old card better? Lol

Your current card has only a marginal performance increase if what I have been reading is correct... I would have gone up to an 8600 tbh.

This was all on AGP. However, I now can get an 8600! Just need monies..

Its worth getting a good card once, i got my 7800 GT, and then 9 weeks later 7900 GT came out cheaper - but its lasted me 17 months and i probably wont replace it till december, at which point i'll replace it all.

One thing that no-one else seems to have picked up on is the RAM. You say you've dropped from 1.7 Gig to 1.5. BF2 is (I think) a fairly RAM hungry game, so it may be worth upping your RAM to 2 Gig. I noticed a huge difference when I went from 1 Gig to 2 Gig, both in loading times and in-game performance, so the same may be true for you.

seeing as your card is an AGP one you could try changing the "AGP apature" size in the BIOS to see if you can make any difference to the performance

Could be server lag, not your GPU. Even my 7900GT slows down on 64-player servers. It only takes one player with a high ping to start slowing everyone down.

Does it happen on 64-player servers even if only partly full?

No, only if it's nearly full or full. I've turned down the vision distance to 50% and that's made quite a difference.
