Why don't we open the THN server?

I agree! We should open up the THN server to the adoring public!

I don't see why we shouldn't. If we open it poeple might come in, and we can play there instead/as well as the EA servers. When they come in they might visit the site and join up and rake in more mone.. I mean valuable players.

It's partly due to two things (I think)

Firstly, it's not a ranked server resulting in less-demand.

Secondly and more importantly, it's not a dedicated BF2 server, and BF2 is a real-resource hog and to have BF2 running constantly would slow everything else down (website, and all other stuff for example)

However, if it can be done, it might be a nice idea, see what one of the "techy" admins thinks :p

This is only an issue if we run too much at once. Since demmand for NS and CS:S have disapeared we could probably host the two instances of UT2004 and one instance of BF2 and stop running the rest. The only way to know for sure is to try it. Technically it is a dedicated server - its just not one we leave up all the time :)

My concern would still be of the reliability of BF2, given the state of early versions - I'd want to be sure that we wouldn't have to restart the server just because BF2 got a bit too greedy.

As for the other games, are there really that many people playing vanilla UT2004 any more? I thought most people had switched over the Alien Swarm (hey, I could be wrong!).

On the CS and NS front, events for those have been partly arranged but have fallen through for various reasons. Perhaps it's time to look at what people are interested in playing and therefore keeping on the server? I think we have people with an interest in each game but clearly not enough to play it on a regular basis. Like IRC, we need players to 'idle' in our games servers to make them appeal to potential players - like my oft-used story of one night when I was on the NS server alone, and ended up with 6 other people on with me (non-THN).

By UT2004 read UT2004-AS. I use them interchangably but thats what I mean.

Events as always will get priority and we will turn off other services to allow events to run - just to clarify.

Nice idea but completely useless.

It might be nice to have the server up so that people could go and test things out etc... but that would really be the only use the server would get.

The reason being because of the ranking system and because everyone uses EA UK/Europe servers. Most of the clans I know who run dedicated ranked servers have a hard time pulling in enough players to make them successful.

Just don't think it's worth it really. :(

Yeah I agree with Bambi there is no real point. I remember when we had the CSS server up and running, and it was really hard to get a lot of people on that - and that was without a ranking system obviously.

Most people who play BF2 are only really intrested in the Ranks, don't ask me why, i wouldn't be too bothered playing on non-ranked servers. I suppose its a view of how well your doing :S

I think Nanor is asking this because of last night.

If we'd had our own server to hop on to it would have been better. I like the fact our server isn't ranked, it gives me a place to mess about without stats messing with my mind.

If we give this a shot. Say, open it non-ranked for a month, then upgrade it to ranked for a month, and see if it makes a difference?

You cant "upgrade" as such, you have to rent a ranked server from an EA approved vendor. This also limits what you can run on it and what access you have to the configuration.

it would also effectivly double the running costs of THN right? :p

The whole "ranked" server issue, does anyone now what makes it ranked? Is it just one file? If so I might be able to get hold of a copy :D

I have one friend who owns his own server renting company and I also have a friend who works for EA games in chertsey so I might be able to get a copy???

But I don't know how EA look upon such things?:D

I was mooching about on the internet once, just thought i'd have a look at how much it would cost to rent a ranked server from EA... it was a lot of money... too much money I suspect...
