Widescreen LCDs and fps games?

[Bolded the question :)]

About 2 days ago the aspect ratios on my CRT monitor(iiyama vision master pro 450) messed up really bad, the left side of the screen became compressed, and i was able to see when dragging windows over there that it was just the side compressed and not the whole view, having tried anohter computer and got the same result(2nd pc has different hardware/OS and gfx manufacturer completely. Atm the only resolution it will display in 4:3 is 1280x1024(which is odd, 1280x960 looks awful).

This is a photo showing what i see at that res:http://img687.yfrog.com/img687/1204/p4270035.jpg Its a bad photo but it does show the problem. Hmmm heres a close up, at the time i wasnt concerned with turning the flash off. http://yfrog.com/gip4270032j(its possible this shot doesnt show the problem as i have described it) You can see in this photo that the aspect ratio towards the middle through right of the screen is correct but most of the left 1/4 of the screen is distorted

I have always used 1600x1200@85hz in the last 8 years.

So, other than world of warcraft i have not seen any games played on a widescreen LCD, and i have no idea how the(FPS games) handle it so that the mouse turns an equal amount in all directions?

Also open to any suggestions about the monitor, though as the other computer got the same result, and the backup dell monitor while not able to display 1600x1200@85(rather 75)hz showed the correct shape display it looks like i am facing buying a new monitor.

One of the things which is confusing is that the bios fills the whole screen and the problems dont begin until its in windows, though the bios is v low res i guess.

Going to try putting the 8800GT back in my pc in place of the 5850 and drivers before i give up and start shopping.

If i get a new monitor, ill do some dusting too :)

As thatbloke says, throw that nasty CRT away and get yourself a widescreen LCD at least.

and i have no idea how the(FPS games) handle it so that the mouse turns an equal amount in all directions?
I'm really unsure what you mean here. You see a wider view in all games in widescreen, not a stretched view, so the mouse is unaffected (provided the game you are playing supports your widescreen resolution, which pretty much all modern games do).

And games that do not just get the black vertical bars treatment?

Games do not get that at all, since widescreen (either 16:10 or 16:9) is now way more common than monitors with a 4:3 resolution.

I think your perception of how things work currently is a little outdated :)

(hmmm, taken the wrong way the above line may sound like an insult, it's not meant that way)

If it can't support widescreen resolutions then it will get the vertical black bars, but the only game I can think of right now is Peggle where I see that happening :p

Just put it this way. Your game will play the same as it has always done, only that now with a widescreen monitor you can see a little bit extra to the left and right, that is all.

Since the point of the thread was this sort of discussion you are right and its not an insult :)

A friend of mine used to phrase "you can see more" to massively enlighten me.

The photo above shows that i need to take my desk apart, no big deal though i will have to move my mic, which has been there through 4 different computers :(

If it doesn't support widescreen resolutions, you'll end up with a stretched fullscreen one. Peggle does support widescreen, it just does it in a different manner than most games.

I also depends on your screen. Mine, for example, let's you set the behaviour when the graphics card changes to a non-widescreen resolution, such as a game that doesn't support widescreen in fullscreen mode. I have it set to show it centered, not stretched, as Chris has made me hate incorrect aspect ratios.

Ahey, :)

A friend of mine used to phrase "you can see more" to massively enlighten me.

This is, unfortunately, not true.

Right now, I'm sitting pretty with both my 4:3 CRTs at 1920x1440. I'm faced with the dreaded prospect of having to swap one of them soonish, and forced to deal with the harsh reality that CRTs are no longer being sold, all LCD/TFT/flatcraps are 16:10 or 16:9 and none of them are capable of these resolutions...

You can see less.

Cheers,
J.

Some games let you see more (horizontal addition)

 Wow. Reading fail! :D It's not the games I'm worried about, it's the monitors!

As I said, my current horizontal resolution is 1920 pixels. How many widescreen monitors do you know that can give me horizontal "addition", i.e., more than 1920 pixels, and that can fit on a regular desk, i.e., not be the size of small cars?

To be more specific, how many widescreen monitors do you know that can deliver my 1440 pixels of vertical resolution?

I want my pixels, damn it!

You can see less.

So, wait, you don't care whether you can actually _use_ the pixels, just that they're there? What I'm saying is, if your games don't support more than 1920 hz res, what does it matter if your monitor does?

Anyway, here's two examples:

HP LP2065, 30", 2560x1600

Dell U2711, 27", 2560x1440

Well, I game at work, which means, I use my monitors for more thangaming, and I need the pixels. :D

In any case, most games support high end resolutions, nowadays...

As for the links, thanks, I appreciate them.

Now for the hard truth:

I game at work. (I mentioned that already, didn't I?) This also means that the company picks up the tab for my gaming/work stuffs. I can easily convince the powers that be to fork over 200~300 for a new monitor... but not 900~1200!

Thing is, monitors are cheap... until you get to the resolutions I need. Then, the price jump is absolutely pornographic... :(

Cheers,
J.
