Windows 32bit and Memory

Windows 32bit + Memory, I know myself that 4 GB of ram in the machine gets me 3.5gb because of other stuff ( which for some reason dosn't include the 640mb gfx card I have ) and 32bit windows can only handle so much memory,

On the other machine, with a 512mb 8800GT, and 4GB of ram, Its only registering 2.75, The machine is brand new ( constructed by yours truly ) and probably is missing some driver or another, can anyone think of what I need to do to sort out the problem ?

The RAM are 4x 1GB sticks of Corsair XMS2 Matched pairs, and I've checked each card to see if any of them are wrong, All fine there, I'm guessing this is either Hardware related (mobo, however POST is stating all 4gb of RAM is fine) Or its software based, either BIOS or Windows itself throwing a paddy ?

The quantity of memory Windows can access is 4GB minus all other addressable memory in your system, IIRC. That's going to vary across hardware.

could be in need of a BIOS update, is odd to be so low though. I'd say worth updating the bios and going from there. My experience is that you'll get somet in the region of 3.2ish up depending on the rest of the spec.

BIOS updated, and there was another problem, FPS on the 8800 GT SUCKS. so far I've managed no higher than 20 on CoD4. 7 on Crysis

this was the same, before and after.

Anyonw have any ideas? :/

check the clocks are all set to what they are supposed to be and that the card isn't overheating as the GTs have a habit of doing.
Also if you have a mulitmeter check that the outputs of the power supply are what they are supposed to be.
Try the card in your pc as it could be that you have a dodgy gfx card.

Going to do that later, there's still no change with the memory, or lack thereof, issue.

Swapped the 8800 GT with my GTS, drastic increase, also I forgot to mention that the GT complains of lack of power, AND the fan on that thing is way too close to the PCB as it scrapes along something, I'm not taking it apart to deal with it, I'm sending it back.

On the memory front, all 4 stick work absolutely fine in my machine so I need to work out why they're still failing in the other box, My 4GB also come up as 2.75gb.

I've used them in a seperate machine which gives me all 4gb to play with, where as the machine they're in is still only giving me 2.75gb

have you memtested it all as there could just be a lot of duff RAM

The fact that it works fine in one system and not another would suggest to me that it is either a bios or an OS issue.

And if its either of those i doubt there's a decent fix for it...

The memory is fine, If it wasn't working it would give me problems in this machine, which it dosn't I've even stuck the 4gb of ram in this one in the other pc which has the same effect, I think its safe to safe the RAM is fine :)

Theres another problem at hand ...

Right. Well that 8800GT was sent back,

I now have a fully working 8800 GTS 512mb XFX Alpha Dog card.

Why will the PC refuse it when if I put the 8800 GTS 640mb XFX XXX card in the machine, it loves it to pieces ?

I'm really confused about this

It's not really confusing. I know this doesn't really help but PC component parts are manufacturerd to not work with each other in my view. Us PC gamers pay a particularly high price for this unpredictable unstablity through hours of frustration trying to get a decent gaming rig to work.

This is what has driven me to consider console gamging.

The motherboard is an XFX board.

the Graphics card is an XFX card

If anything they should work better.

So, your point stands hotstuff, but I believe that its false in this particular predicament :p
