[Tech] Wireless Problem! HALP

Right, im sure this is going to be moved to a more appropriate forum, but I need help. Even Bex is at a bit of a loss.

Im lodging while im at university, and im having problems with the wireless.

It sees the network there, full stregnth, passkey is fine, and it connects.

However, I get a message saying "Local Only", and im between my the network and the internet on the Network and sharing Box, there is a big red X.

When I click it, it sees that there is a problem, but just tells me that "Your router or modem is unavailable".

Does anyone have any ideas. Ive tried fiddling with everything, checking wires, turning the router on and off, and Bex has done a load of complicated stuff (Proxy settings in firefox, etc)

Oh yes, on the status of the connections is says something like :

IPv4 connectivity : Local
IPv6 Connectivity : Limited.

(This mayt be the iither way around).

Anyway, as you can guess, im not much good with this sort of thing, so if anyone does have any ideas, try and keep it simple. Thanks guys, if you can sort this, then I love you all.

Apart from Haven, he went to Ireland. Im at uni atm so can acess the internet on their PCs, oh and also, the wireless works fine at Home and at Bex's.

I can check this forum untill about 5pm, so if anyone has any ideas, try and get em up before then.

Me and Bex, on another note, are back from holiday. So HAI and to the WoW guys : I shall see you as soon as this F**ki** peice of sh** is f****** fixed.

In all likelihood, you've not been handed an appropriate IP or, perhaps, a gateway address.

Try this:

  1. Go to Start | Run...
  2. Type "cmd" (no quotes) and hit OK
  3. In the command prompt that appears, type "ipconfig /all"
  4. Right click on the title bar of the command prompt and select Edit | Select All
  5. Then hit the Enter key (which will copy everything selected)
  6. Then paste all the results here

We've had similar issues here at work. I believe the issue is that the type of encryption that it has auto-detected or that you selected is in fact incorrect.

Go to Control Panel->Network and Sharing Center->Manage Wireless Networks (on the list to the left).

Find the one you are trying to connect to in that list (it should be in there if you have previously connected to it). Right click-> properties. Select the Security tab.

Mess with the Security Type and Encryption type settings until it works. You will find that WPA and WPA2 each have 2 different encryption types available - you may well need the other type.

First thought was invalid gateway pretty much as Ronin stated. You can connect to the wireless fine but the gateway given by the DHCP is wrong, either you've two DHCP servers running at the same time or you've specified a gateway/dns that cannot be reached.

To find all your ip/gateay gumph hit "windows key and R", type "cmd" in the run prompt, type "ipconfig /all"

Try pinging the gateway internal ip (if you know it) and then ping a known external ip (promethius is 87.117.203.96 if you want to try it). Once thats done try and ping a DNS address i.e. www.cheese.com :)

Report back and may the swartz be with you!

Another possibility is the configuration required for your uni's wireless network. Until last year, the uni network I was using required a particular proxy setup script to be input in the network settings before it would connect properly. Usually there will be a page on the uni intranet with any additional configuration that may be necessary, and if they are nice, a setup script to point the network config to.

Is it assigning it's own IP?
If it is a apple bit of networking kit and it is a WEP key try it with a $ at the start of the wep key.

What is the modem if it is an apple thing? Didn't know apple made [/i]just[/i] modems.

Assuming the modem is doing it's job going modem>router>wireless flange. Have you connected directly to the modem to make sure it is getting tubes.

According to a poster here, the address you've indicated there is commonly used by Apple for its guest network and the suggestion is to disable the guest network and try again.

Someone in this thread (who also seems to be called Tim... coincidence?) was told that they may have firewall troubles.

What I see is that the PC is being assigned an IP via DHCP, but we can't tell if that DHCP service is the router's or the university's.
