WoW addiction

For those you don't read, it is estimated that 40% of WoW players are addicted.

MMORPGs and game addiction. If you're suffering from dry eyes, headaches, back aches, erratic sleep patterns, it may be more than just your average hangover: according to Dr. Maressa Orzack, you could be suffering from video and computer game addiction. A clinical psychologist, Orzack is founder and coordinator of Computer Addiction Services at McLean Hospital in Newton, Mass., and is also an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School. Computer Addiction Services is one of the few outpatient clinics in the U.S. that provides specific treatment for game addiction.

Which means how many people on this forum are addicted? Twisto? Nanor? Haven? Thatlot?

Just after I had this conversation with Haven this morning!

Personally, I think it's drivel, this talk of addiction to WoW.

Dry eyes, headaches, back aches, erratic sleep patterns... how about a simple product of using your computer too much in a sub-optimal environment? No addiction there. Seems to me to be just a fad for "normal" people to explain why people would rather play on the computer than, say, go out drinking or watch TV. See, we're addicted to games because it's easier than accepting that people tend to hate their jobs, their coworkers, their families and more besides and feel powerless to do anything but hide in games.

And I like my job, my coworkers, my family and feel anything but powerless... and I'd happily play games all day, every day, for quite some time to come. Am I addicted? No. I just have a clear idea of what I enjoy. That said, I probably wouldn't play WoW all day every day... I need to mix things up to keep it interesting.

Any time I see quotes of high percentages with catchy headlines it makes me wonder how much of it is just sensationalism. If someone said "40% of people are addicted to alcohol", contrarily, I'd be more tempted to agree (given the quote makes light of the "average hangover").

When you say addiction does that require you to go into withdrawal if it is stopped, and to have cravings, yes it is obvious what other addiction(s) im thinking off, but before everything, perhaps defining addiction would be a good idea. My parents though i was addicited to pcgaming, when they said this i said "fine, i wont use it for a week" and i didnt, while im not a smoker i will use this to compare with; everyone says an addiction to smoking is hard to stop doing it.[sorry bad english i cant think of a way to refraise(tired)]

I'd still like to see all of you play less WoW and more games that are actually worth playing

Anyway, the article states "as much as" and going over it quickly i couldn't find the method they used to measure that. So it's probably the prof's estimate and nothing scientific.
