Wow - Lifestyle or Game?

An ex-Blizzard employee interviewed in this months PC gamer described MMO games like Wow "as a lifestyle more than a game".

That has just got to induce a debate....

I agree.

It is a lifestyle. It was my social life for a long time. It isn't anymore, but that's not to say it won't be in the future (thinking of Cataclysm here).

I don't consider that a bad thing, as I never really did much in RL anyway. And I still don't now.

Its definitely a platform to socialise and meet new people and many players have made it their own playground with their own rules (i.e. RP).

I think of WoW more as an environment now than a game but it obviously have gaming elements for those that want them.

Well obviously its first and foremost, just a game, not playing wont kill you, make you ill or affect RL in any way.

Unfortunatly its a very addictive game, when a game becomes an addiction you realy have to step back and look at what your gaining from being in wow all the time, and missing in RL (though sometimes its not alot). At the addiction level i guess the game then is a lifestyle.

Keeping a balance is the essential part, i know people who quit there jobs to keep wow playing at a maximum - a point to which i think the game has become like crystal Meth.

There is such a thing as a game thats too good! (like crystal meth again! :D)

I think that WoW, like most MMOs, can be what you make of it. You may get drawn into lifestyle/social changes if you play it long enough, but I still think that to a degree it's always up to the player.

I think this is just all about self control

Firstly if you quit work and stuff to get maximum play you are a fool!

At the end of the day you have to look at this game as a past time, because its a fun game which you like to play and want to do well in but in the long run what are you personally achieving from playing it and where is it going to get you in real life.

I agree with both Windzarko and Astroid.
I have heard that some chinese dude killed himself because he was declined from
geting invited to some guild, he also wrote a letter where he told the wolrd that according to him he had no reason to live if he is not a member of a "elite" guild.
All this was during vanilla WoW.

Now if you ask me, that is going a bit over the line.

I have to say that I agree on this.
It is a bit what we make it out to be.

Also:
One way to look at WoW; A -very- advanced interactive chat application with loads of functions to keep you busy for a while :p
