X360 - Mass Effect

Initially when people started talking about this game, I didn't really pay very much attention. However! Recently, I saw it again on IGN (I think IGN is now my game site of preference, far better than gamespot) and it actually looks like it could turn into something.

It's being developed by BioWare, and for anyone that's played NWN or KotoR that statement itself probably carries a fair bit of whack. Apparently, it'll be released quarter 2 of 2007 (supposed to have been released the 12th january, but pushed back somewhat I guess) exclusively for the Xbox 360. The game itself seems to be some kind of meld between Oblivion, KotoR and ... some spacey exploration game that I aint never heard of. Basically, it's an open-ended adventure that takes place across various planets of the universe, as opposed to a swathe of land. You'll get your own starship and motley crew and travel the galaxy, uncovering bits and bobs and pieces of the main story.

Here's the article on IGN

They've managed to convince me, so I preordered it already :)

In conclusion to my three-part triple whammy blammo X360 update (see Forza 2 and Fable 2), here is an update on the first hour of gameplay in Mass Effect.

IGN endorsed linkamajig

Including introducing the metal-spike impaling space zombies, we also have a small lookie-see at the 'deep' character creation system and even a glimpse at some manly real-time combat.

A little hands-on update from IGN, looking at the first couple hours of gameplay in a bit more depth, and also giving a bit more of a feel for the combat and communications systems.

IGN - Mass Effect Preview

This is looking like it could be a topper of a game, so long as the combat system isn't too complicated and clunky, and it doesn't fall for the far-too-open-endedness of Oblivion. Will keep you posted.

I was watching some of the trailers for this on xbox.com and gametrailers and oh my god does it look soooo purty. I'm going to get this as sooon as it ships in the UK! Can't wait!

9.4, nice! If IGN are telling the truth then this looks like a nice big adventure (after FFXII, of course). I just hope it doesn't suffer from the Oblivion too much freedom and customization problem.

EDIT: It's only a 2-page review, and pretty badly structured. There's IGN in a rush to get their material out the the door again

EDIT2: Here's the GameSpot take. 8.5, probably a more sensible score to settle for.
