(Inspired Twistos post in the other world cup thread I thought it would be good to start a new one)

So what do you think the highlights of the world cup were? Best goals, games, players etc.

In my opinion the Germany-Italy game was the best, it was so fast paced with both sides really trying to score throughout the entire game, shame it ended with Italy winning :( lol. I also think the Brazil-France game was very good as well as it showed Zidane at his best.

Goal wise I think Joe Cole had shot an amazing goal against Sweden, Tierry Henry scored a very nice finish in the Brazil-France game and Frings scored a nice goal in the Germany-Costa Rica game.

Player wise Zidane was excellent, however that headbutt really ruined it for me, he let his team down and most of all himself :(

But thats just my opinion! Whats yours? :D

I wasn't too impressed with World Cup 2006.

I thought that a lot of the games were very boring, with very few goals in certain big games. I don't like to see games being won on penalties, It's no way to decide a football match and I think there should be a new system put in place.

I also thought that the refereeing in certain games was pretty poor, however this is to be expected in big tournaments like this.

I am sick to death of people saying that Zidane ruined it for them and for himself. Materazi must have said something extremely provocative or else Zidane would not have done it. If he said what the media are saying he said then he deserved it. I certainly would have done the same.

Anyway it wasn't a bad World Cup but certainly not one of the better ones.

True, but don't forget this is a world class player and, more importantly, a role model. If all of his fans start headbutting each other and then using the excuse "Well he said .......", then the world will be even more fubar than it already is.

The whole reason they got the captains of the various teams to read out that anti-racism statement is because people (especially the young) are influenced by what they see their "heroes" doing. The day after Eric Cantona did his flying kick into the crowd after one of them said something provocative, I saw several of the people at my school imitating him.

If you have any adult level of maturity, no words, no matter how provocative, should cause you to lose your temper and headbutt someone (or kick them in the nuts like that Argentinian player, or stamp on someone like Rooney).

he said that zidane was a terrorist apparently
materazzi's defense was
"i'm not cultured enough to know what a islamic terrorist is"
hmmmmmm do we believe him, me thinks not

Would you be offended if someone called you a terrorist? I really doubt it. Unless you are a terrorist...

Obviously Zidane's secret is out, and we'd all better watch it. Or watch our chests, in this case, at least until he learns how to properly headbutt someone...

to be honest after 7 years at boarding school nothing offends me, so i think the idea of lashing out at something someone says is just pathetic, fair play if someone decides to attack u defend urself, but there is nothing that can justify one of the best players in the world headbutting an opponent due to something they said.

I see your point Wraith and I in no way condone Zidane's actions, However what I heard was that Materazzi said his mother was a "terrorist whore"... Obviously we don't know what is correct if any, but I can't help feel a bit sorry for Zidanne. He is/was one of the best players in football history - and his whole career is now going to be overshadowed by this one event.

It's easy enough to say this, but you have to remember that people have different temper levels and different sensitivities on certain subjects. Now this terrorist thing or mother thing (or whatever it was) must have been something that zidane was very sensistive about. Now that doesn't make it right, but I don't think it's fair to say what you've just said - that might be the case for you but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's the same for every body else.

Anyway what Zidane done was wrong and he has set a bad example for the people who admire him, but can't that be the end of it? No because the media do what they always do with incidints like this - blow it up and it lasts forever :(.

Zidanes mother had recently been put into hospital on the day of the final. So that could have been it...

He tarnished his own career. The media has nothing to do with it; I'm not going to remember it because of what the media says, I'm going to remember it because it's a memorable event.
