To be honest im getting pretty sick of this "stuff not available in your country" shit as it happens with alot of the network tv streams aswell

Does anyone have any further info on this? is it only "official videos" that will be blocked? Dissapointing from youtube, i always thought that theyd be the last people to do that.

On a sidenote: i can see sweden soon becoming "the hosting capital of the world" since their lax ip protection laws. Someone sweedish could certainly make alot of money there :)

The Register has some coverage.

El Reg said:
YouTube is blocking most of its music videos from UK viewers after negotiations with British royalty collectors turned sour.

The Performing Rights Society (PRS) for Music, a group representing artists and publishers, and YouTube both blame each other entirely for the impasse, of course.

Patrick Walker, YouTube's top pact-maker in Europe said in a blog post today that the site will block all "premium" music videos in the UK until it can strike up a new contract with PRS that is "economically sustainable."

There's a bunch of wah going on here and there. Even made it to BBC News.

BBC News said:
The row between PRS and YouTube has attracted high profile attention.

Lord Carter, the UK's Minister for Communications, Technology and Broadcasting, has also commented on the row.

Giving evidence before the Business Select Committee the minister said he suspected a degree of "commercial posturing on the part of both parties" but said the row was indicative of a wider issue.

Basically, PRS wants money for nothing. YouTube/Google wants chicks for free. PRS figures that net-radio can hang, for all it cares. This one will take some higher authority to do some kicking, I think.

Youtube isn't the only website to follow this trend, in general as websites become more popular, they become crappier. 'Tis time to find a new free video hosting website!

EDIT: Well, that or start using a proxy! :smug:

Well, we'll see about that, come the conclusion of the pirate bay trial. In the end, afaik, youtube (in this case) isn't asking for free chicks, but really really cheap ones. Problem is, PRS (and the music industry in general, if we count other modalities) wants their chicks to be expensive, or not available at all. Now that would work if they also controlled what was on the internet. As it is right now, people will get those vids however they can, and if the options are "Illegal or not at all", well...

I try quite hard to get my music legally but I point blank refuse to buy anything with DRM. It's pretty frustrating when I could have bought a track, if only I lived in the US and could order it from Amazon.com's MP3 downloads.

Another classic case of the Music industry being greedy and not understanding technology....

If Music companies actually learned to treat people as "customers" instead of "revenue streams" then maybe we would get somewhere.....

iTunes is no longer uploading thier tracks with DRM, so it's only the vast majority of thier old database (which is slowly being converted) into iTunes + :)

Though they're still £0.79 a track, or £7.99 for an album, generally being cheaper than buying individually...

We tend to get the "not available in your country" thing here in Sweden as well at times when it comes to YouTube.
Also. When it comes to them stopping things. It isn't just official videos.
YouTube have also gone so far as to stop and remove some AMVs that contain 'copyrighted music'.

We had that with the Cadbury's TV advert (chocolate makers with the gorilla playing the drums) the clips were removed, unless put back on with no sound :/

all of it comes across as petty and greedy on behalf of the IP holders, IP was designed to protect artists from exploitation from publishers, not publishers exploiting their fans.
