I've read they are blind. Apparently that level receives the most consistent praise in reviews too though. I have no idea what the canon reason for the blindness is. The RPS review said there's a cliffhanger ending meaning well, no point playing if theres no hope of an answer, I wonder if they will cancel the DLC.

All aliens are blind. The 'canon' reason would be because they, uh, have no eyes.

They hunt/interact via pheromones and rudimentary kinesthesia.

Sounds like a matter of perspective on the definition of blind. ie Unable to see/Unable to perceive.

Indeed, there's also a postulation that their hissing is a form of echo-location - but either way they definitely aren't blind because they don't need eyes to hunt Stupid fragging game seems to have an unlimited amount of nails to hammer into its own coffin...
