I'd certainly agree with that sentiment but, for some people, there is more to it than that. Professional gaming I imagine to be similar to professional sport or professional athletics; it is fun, at some level, but it is also work, hard work and somedays that's just going to be done because you have to practise and not because it is fun.

Or, for people like me, having fun is serious business. I don't make light of my or anyone's fun. Not that you have made such a statement, but I tend to vehemently disagree with such statements as "it's only a game". It's not "only" a game. It's my entertainment, my fun. I'd go so far as to say that having fun is my raison d'etre. It's worth getting serious over. But I have fun being serious about it, so all is cool. :)

Responding purely to that example, I think that text "conversations" had in-game really don't amount to giving any information about a person. Even perfectly pleasant people IRL can turn into utter morons when presented with a text-only interface (which is just made worse if they're being frustrated by you killing them all the time ;) ). I think that happens, in part, because many people do not understand how their written word comes across when that's all there is.

For example, if I were chatting with Haven or Piacular or someone online then I might type "oh you utter monkey!" if they did something stupid (not that they tend to or anything). How you say it is the important bit. Face to face, I could say it with a cheeky grin or I could light righteously pissed off. Online, people often only read what they feel in their heads, unmitigated by the person behind it.

Point there is that I'm not sure that, in general, people do take games "too seriously", just that the lack of facial cues really hampers communication.

That said, people who scream at their monitor in rabid outrage over some mistake a team mate has made in a game are probably too stressed to be playing in a team. Unfortunately saying "chill out" can make them worse... :p Again, are they taking it too seriously? I'm not sure. I think it might all be a reflection of internal state (i.e. they're feeling explosively bottled up already and it just comes out in the game).

Don't I know it. I'm still stinging from your response when I said that back in one of (I think) the BF2 clan match threads ;) I'm just the same myself though, based on my general outlook of "if something's worth doing, it's worth doing as best you can".

Sorry about the cliche
