EDIT: Those pics are awesome, definitely not worth 10,000 lives.

Its the Nuclear reactors that are going to really mess up the survivors =\

That's the thing though - they aren't. The whole Nuclear situation, while I'm not trying to downplay it, is under control - there are many, many, MANY safeguards in place, many of wihch are still holding firm, despite the explosions that have occurred, and are keeping the level of radiation leaked to very low levels (if at all).

There are going to be people that will take this and run with it and use it as THE excuse to not use nuclear power/technology at all, however I'm not seeing any massive radiation leak at the moment and considering the damage that has been done by the earthquake/tsunami I'm surprised it's not worse...

For once I'm glad to be proven wrong, the idea that there could be a radiation leak after everything that Japan has been though just seems overly cruel.
Last I heard they were evacuating people of a certain radius as a pre caution as the sea water wasn't cool the reactors as fast as they would have liked, but they do seem to have it very well controlled.

One of the guys I play BB with at Blood Bowl Tactics is in Japan. He had to sleep overnight in his office, and then got back to his family the next day. Luckily they were alright. They're all worried about the nuclear situation.

The nuclear situation seems to be under control (though a struggle). It has been classified a level 4 nuclear incident. Comparatively: Three mile island meltdown - category 5, chernobyl - level 7.

The biggest issue seems to be getting hold of basic essentials. Narly Bird said bottled water and bread are impossible to get hold of due to panic buying, and the reports I saw this morning indicated that exposure is the main problem currently, with losts of people cold, wet and homeless.

I work on a Nuclear power station,

Seems the major problem they had (apart from the obvious) was that the EDGs (essential diesel generators) which maintain power to the cooling part of the station, where destroyed, they tried portable power generation to no avail, hence the sea water and boric acid they are throwing in to poison the reactor (boric acid soaks up neutrons and prevents fuel criticallity).

Explosion 1 on reactor 1 was a fail safe, they released a safety valve to let out the excess uncooled steam, this pressure build up took the roof of (as designed) reactor 1 is in a petty safe state.

Explosion 2 on reactor 3 however, thats uses Mixed Oxide fuel, its a bit more potent, that roof blow out wasnt ideal, the mix they're pumping in to cool it should work, but its not a great place to be with a MOX reactor. thats the one to watch.

Fingers crossed it all goes ok.

All very serious so to lighten the mood and risk a barrage of hatred:
At least it wasn't Godzilla this time :p

Yeah, I was watching the news and they were saying that even tho the inner cities are undamaged there are queues of 300 plus people out side the shops and that all the food and drink (that wasn't alcohol) was gone.

Surprised there's any alcohol left, I'd want a stiff drink if I were there.. :p

This post on the Something Awful forums defines precisely what is going on, seems to make perfect sense, and rubbishes all of the media sensationalism that's currently surrounding these "meltdowns".

Fantastic find here Bloke normally I wouldn't read something so long winded but it's very well laid out.
