[D3] Blizzard do something nice

Unfortunately a lot of companies don't assume low sales are down to quality even they just assume low sales is down to piracy and therefore next title is even more DRM'ed

Personally whenever I might have bought a game but then didn't because of something like this I try and email the company and let them know why I did not buy their product even though I doubt it has any effect

A good point that I did not mention, but was on my mind.

It's a poor culture. 'The last product didn't sell'
'Do we know why?'
'Who cares, let's not bother to find out'

In a similar vein, in science, it annoys me when people don't discuss complications and problems with processes. - It doesn't help anyone if all the struggle you went to to sort out something isn't reported, and you don't publish either problems, or the solutions you came up with to solve them, instead just publishing a pristine (normally thinned out) dataset.

I agree with your sentiment Panda.

(Was going to write more but edited myself down :D)

I don't recall having any login issues when trying to play other single player games such as The Witcher 2, Skyrim, Deus Ex: Human Revolution on launch day.
that's funny, i seem to remember there being quite a lot of people who couldn't play Skyrim or DE:HR on launch day due to similar technical issues with steam.

Well, i played Diablo 2, and i shall be glad not to put up with all the cheating that went on all the time, thanks to blizzards new set up of having it all server side, though i was suprised about the login issues, until i read somewhere that a blue posted that the there was no point in getting loads more servers as the high player count would drop off after less than 1 month.

How long it took us to beat the first of 4 difficulties in mp:
It only takes 15 hours to win normal.

"can't play my single player game offline...? not interested, thanks"

The second problem with this DRM system is that it won't be uncrackable. And some time in the not too distant future someone will work out a way to play D3 single player without blizzard. At this point, people will go an get a pirated copy as it's actually offering more functionality than the developers own. A similar thing happened with nocd functionality when it first started being used, and yet noone seems to learn.

There's also no statistics anywhere for sales increased by piracy, where by someone downloads the game, and then decides that actually they do want to play / own the full version...

This is why I like "time limited" demo's, or in the case of Onlive the full game and no functionality to save unless you pay for it. A limited demo, or in many cases beta just doesn't tend to cut the mustard.

Steam gave both of those games the option to pre-load. And unlocking the game only took 5 or so minutes, nothing too unbearable.
That is nothing compared to the catastrophe that Blizzard called upon themselves by making diablo 3 always online just so that they could make some more money from their fantastic RMAH which everyone loves so much.

Isn't the auction house....currently unavailable?

yes because that 100% works all the time for everyone with no multi-hour waits for steam to stop telling you it's "too busy" and the game is "unavailable" :)

Well, I'll point out that by hacking they were referring to duping, but yeah, the best thing about all this is that Blizzard is refusing to admit they could be hacked and blaming players who report being hacked even with authenticators and if you get hacked twice you get banned from the RMAH, no matter the circumstances. :p

Banned from the auction house? Oh no! Not able to give blizzard money? What a shame.

I know, it's a travesty!

Personally, the thing that rankles me most about that is the idea that they're punishing people for Blizzard's own bad security. . . .

Blizzard say that all "hacks" have been by people using passwords : http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...lo-3-account-hacks-outlines-security-measures
We've been taking the situation extremely seriously from the start, and have done everything possible to verify how and in what circumstances these compromises are occurring. Despite the claims and theories being made, we have yet to find any situations in which a person's account was not compromised through traditional means of someone else logging into their account through the use of their password. While the authenticator isn't a 100% guarantee of account security, we have yet to investigate a compromise report in which an authenticator was attached beforehand.

The "physical" authenticator that I own cost me £6 when I bought it (and likely its battery is going to run out soon, now I think about it...) I think it's a little more now, but it's really not that much. Less than the cost of a month's subscription to WoW, certainly.

In addition, there is a free app that you can get for pretty much any phone platform (including certain older "featurephones") that acts as an authenticator for your account.

Sorry but there really is very little excuse for not having one, and ANYONE can get hacked. My own WoW account was hacked 5 years ago - all my stuff was taken and as I had very privileged access to the guild's resources, most of the valuable stuff the guild had was taken too. It was all restored, but it took a week to do so - and the guild was set back somewhat in our progress.

There was a flash vulnerability that was being exploited by the hackers to obtain your password, I had updated flash on all of the machines I used, except my work one. Logged in to the WoW forums from my work PC during lunch and not long after that I was hacked. The hacker even had the cheek to send me an in-game mail telling me he "was leaving me a little". (32 Gold, and the gear I had on when i had logged out).

I have very little sympathy for people who get hacked if they do not have an authenticator.

The same goes for D3, and would also go for SC2, if there was any worth to actually hacking in to people's SC2 accounts.
