In a much more brutal match than the 2nd year dwarven coach was expecting the dwarves faced off against a human team that looked like it was coming together nicely.
The game had been postponed once as bobrek had woken to find only half his face worked, he found this meant that yelling at his players was impossible so came up with a flimsy pretext of being a bit tired. However he woke this morning in more pain than he care to mention having got straight back into training yesterday a little earlier than was advised. This pain proved invigorating so the coach starting kicking his players and contacted Ronin to get the game underway. With adrenaline pumping (great way to stop pain if only for a short while) the game started with the dwarves kicking.
A smart move on the part of the humans as it meant the dwarves new weapon the deathroller Maur elected to sit in a huff at the side if his team weren't getting the ball. The dwarves weren't expecting the brutality of the dwarves and a dwarf blocker on the first move of the game while chatting to another player about how the humans were funny looking was knocked out cold by a very cross looking ogre. The humans took the initiative and made a flanking move and knocked a good chunk of the dwarves onto their arses.
The human coach was heard to chuckle
Not often you see a Dwarf LoS all lying down
While not entirely accurate as most dwarves spend a greater than normal time so drunk that horizontal is the most logical position it was indeed a bad omen on the bloodbowl field.
The humans looked quite dominant for a few turns with a powerful move down the sideline and a strong cage building. They did spend a fraction longer setting up their push than perhaps was sensible as the dwarves attempted to sort themselves out. One foolish troll slayer Gulin Kulgur-Troll did however decide that this being bashed by humans wasn't for him and was bashed straight off the side of the pitch.
It was at this point that Damgni the other TS seeing his fellow slayer getting the chance to sit down (something he has prided himself in doing with 4 injuries so far) took umbrage and with the help of 2 blockers with guard dived at the ogre. He had hoped that attacking such a brute would give him a chance to have a nice sit down as well. Upon hitting the ogre as hard as he could he realised that he had been a little overenthusiastic and looked a little abashed when the dead ogre was removed from the field moments later.
The dwarves pushed thinking they had at least secured the ball for this half, when 2 nicely placed blocks and a player broke free with the ball and was in sight of the end zone. bobrek looked stunned and had not expected such finesse from a team that up to that point seemed more than happy to be beating the ale out of the dwarves.
Not to be out done by the fancy foot work both dwarf runners charged at the ball carrier (who I think was James Darrel Edwards) butrekson took his chance and knowing that this was a vital hit so close to the endzone plastered the human. The ball skipped off the pitch and was placed near 2 dwarf blockers. The rest of the half turned into a scrap to get the ball. In the midst of the bashing Scott McCoy one of the human linesmen got hit rather hard and broke his hand.
The first half ended 0-0
bobrek received the ball in the second half and Maur rumbled onto the pitch for the first time. With players down and the dwarves buoyed by the presence of the deathroller Glangan the runner collected the ball and started another methodical dwarven drive.
It didn't go exactly to plan and huge credit must be given to the Storm Heroes forcing the dwarves to break in the last 2 turns to guarantee a score. The dwarves set themselves up in the centre of the pitch with the mindset of allowing the deathroller to forge a path. The human blitzers were tougher than the dwarves had bargained for and did a fine job of holding up the dwarves. To the point that Damgni got his wish went attempting to blitz, he was knocked straight over and put in the injury pit for the 4th time.
The dwarves were pushed to the last however Glangan made his move and scored in the final turn securing a 1-0 victory to the dwarves. Ronin played very hard and I needed all my dwarfish luck to come out with the win. Ronin was probably the better player however due to some well placed mighty blow he didn't have the humans left to stop the dwarf march.
