Xylak and I had our smacktalk match, and it was very VERY gruesome.
Although it was up to me to back up my smack talk from the end of last season, I took a look at Xylak's roster and a shiver went up my spine:
Both Mummies with Guard. Wights With guard, zombies covered in block. Ghouls with block and sure hands. It was a well developed team with solid skill choices, and the amount of guard, and high strength was going to be a massive issue for all my frenzy players if I wasn't really careful. Block everywhere meant that my block edge wasn't really useful. Basically, it was going to be like playing myself using the Coffin Dodgers, except with more strength, and more ghouls. I was hoping my edge was going to be in the shear volume of pushing I could do. With 5 frenzy players on the pitch (4 really, since my yeti sucks in every way) I could really open holes, and I was willing to bet Xylak hadn't had a lot of experience with Frenzy. I might have some opportunities to get some of his players off the pitch.
I won the toss, and elected to kick. My pussy S2 kicker now even more of a pussy with Fend punted the ball to the centre of the field, and I started wondering what I was going to do about defending the mummies. Xylak's first turn, one of the mummies KOd the Yeti, useful as ever, and off the pitch before he gets to do anything YET AGAIN.
Xylak leaves an opening down one side, and allows me to blitz his ball carrying ghoul with a 1DB from a runner, who picks up the ball. I can't get any players through to support or lock up Xylak's faster players though, and most of my guys are on the floor. I think he KOd my kicker, who had bravely run in to try to lock up a mummy. Xylak is on the back foot, as he was most of the first half, but attempts to blitz my runner holding the ball. He can only push him. He curses, and surrounds him with players and TZs. Again, most of my guys are on the floor.
I try to blitz my runner to free him up by pushing away the weak point in his net, which would allow me to score, but it's a tough get with a -2DB, predictably it fails. Xylak consolidates, and picks up the ball, but more of my players are seeping through into his backfield. His mummies are thinning out my front line though, and are locking up my ulfwerners.
I attempt to blitz his ball carrying ghoul, but can't knock the ball free. I think I've tied his ball carrier up though.
Xylak tries to break free, and sort of succeeds, making a nifty pass to a free ghoul using a nerves of steel ghoul. I try to blitz again, but STILL can't free up the ball, as all Xylak's guard is really paying off, ass is his surehands. I try to form a screen for my endzone (ball still behind the halfway line in Xylak's half). I pull a couple of safeties back.
Knowing he's running low on time, Xylak goes for it, and breaks his ball carrier through, but crucially leaves him 2 squares from the sideline, in frenzy distance! He can't get any support to the ball carrier, but locks up both of my safeties, and bogs down the rest of my players at the halfway line. Some stellar play on my part allows me to free up an ulfwerner, and my S4 guard lineman. The guard player lines up next to the ball carrier, and sure enough, I get enough pushes to push him off the pitch. (If Xylak had left him further infield, he'd still have had the ball).
The ball ends up in the middle of nowhere, and I burn a reroll to dodge one of my safeties to go pick it up. I've picked up a few more KOs now, and the pitch looks quite open. Xylak blitzs my ball carrier on his turn 8, but has no way of getting to the ball or getting to the endzone. I free up the only player I have in range of Xylak's endzone, and go for a long pass. Predictably it fails. 0-0 at the half.
Secondf half we get a weather change, and it's blazing hot. My Yeti wakes up! All my players are available. Crucially one of Xylak's mummies succumbs to the heat, leaving him a man down. Some poor positioning on his half lets me push a wight off the pitch. He'll remember the threat range for frenzy next game... The Yeti starts doing some actual blocking! WOOOOOO.
My second turn is bloody as fuck. I positioned my players carefully to have the ability to push not one, but 2 of Xylak's players off the pitch. One goes off happily enough, and gets a MNG. The second push attempt (from 4 squares in!) doesn't get the right dice, and I feel a little upset, apart from the fact that the Ghoul I was going for is injured, and killed! I think I injure another of his players, and KO one too. His guys are hitting the turf like it's covered in fresh brains (it's actually covered in Ghoul brains....) At this point, scoring is a bit of a formaility, and I elect not to stall, knowing I'll have a significant player advantage after I kick again.
After the kickoff, Xylak mispositions his wight, the only player up on his team with AG3, and has to run back for the ball. My two runners streak after it, towards the ball. Meanwhile, on the LOS, the mummies are wreaking Havok, and taking revenge, injuring the Yeti (YETI AGAIN, ho ho, punny.) I manage to get the ball with my player advantage, and score again, on the ensuing Kick off, the Mummies score another injury, killing one of my linemen, meaning I use my apothcary.
Game finished at 2-0.
Both teams are battered, I have a -1AV lino who's going to have to look at the new NFL rules on serious concussions, and retire (forceably).
Xylak will have nightmares about frenzy, and my smack talk was well and truly backed up.
Verified this game, and Dreamy vs Phil.
