All games verified and only one more left to play this week: Ghostwolf vs Xarlaxas.
Now, for a little commentary:
Storm Heroes, valiant losers of last season's THN Bowl, line up against a previous adversary, Necromantics. Both teams have had to trim their rosters to qualify for this league and, in the Heroes' case, this has meant that they entered the first match a player down as their quarterback, James Darrell Edwards, is out with a back injury. However, as per league rules, a journeyman linesman was provided for the duration of the match.
Kick off went to Necromantics and they gathered their strength on the right flank with the ball in the clutches of a devious werewolf. The lines crashed together and quickly a man was down on either side. Dwayne Hicks, Blitzer for the Heroes, got a hand to the ball carrier only to see the ball slip forward to a ghoul before he could take it away.
Still the lines tussled, neither one quite getting the advantage they needed to make progress, 'til a small hole opened up towards the centre of the and the ghoul nimbly dodged through with werewolves and wights forming a pocket around the carrier. The Heroes' line followed closely, though, and managed to keep the ball out of the end zone, leading to a 0-0 tie at half time.
Pleased at shutting down Necromantic's drive, the Heroes went into the second half hopeful but undermanned: 10 men for Necromantics, but 9 for the Heroes. Fortunately, Dutch made an impression in the D-line and a zombie was turfed off the pitch quite quickly. However, this luck didn't hold. Taking advantage of the fact that the undead do not tire, the D-line overwhelmed the Heroes with some key knock-outs and stuns and with only a quarter of the match remaining they put a wight over the score line to take the lead 1-0.
Both teams lined up again, with Heroes receiving, only 9 players either way this time. The Heroes knew they needed to make a big play and Necromantics smelt blood and pushed for the kill; a wight and a ghoul broke past the Heroes' O-line and rushed into the backfield looking for the reserve quarterback, Jimmy Dix. With the undead pressing hard for the sack, they didn't have the manpower to stop John McClane from breaking through the line and Jimmy Dix pressing upfield between the oncoming defenders to throw a long pass perfectly into McClane's hands. The crowd went wild, but it wasn't over yet!
Necromantics raced to intercept the Heroes' blitzer and a werewolf successfully knocked McClane to the floor, picking up the ball a moment later and pulling it back to almost the halfway line. Unperturbed, Dutch lead a violent assault, knocking the ball free once more and sending the werewolf flying. Another couple of key blocks and nimble escapes left John McClane on his feet downfield and the ball free on the ground, but only Jimmy Dix could get there. Thing is, Dix was tangled between a wight and a werewolf, with the wight and his own O-line between him and the ball...
He ducked, weaved, scrambled and dived past the wight, evading two tackles and picking up the ball beautifully. Another long pass pitched overhead, with only a zombie with a chance to intercept, which it had no chance at. For a moment, it looked like McClane might fumble the ball but he pulled it in and burned into the endzone with just seconds to go before the final whistle.
While the Heroes kicked to Necromantics once more, the whistle blew on a 1-1 draw that could only be described as epic.
