Bluetooth USB required

I am looking to get a device which allows me to transfer material from my mobile phone to pc. I am assuming that a USB bluetooth adaptor is the best way forward.

I am looking for one that is very easy to use. Hopefully it doesn't require any software to be loaded up, ie win xp recognises ok and downloads easily.

Any suggestions of product?

What kind of phone do you have? You're certain it allows transfer of files(?) via bluetooth?

Bluetooth is pretty slow. I've got a USB bluetooth adapter, and it's useful, but for transferring files, straight up USB is a lot better (if your phone supports it).

In addition, you'll find that unless it is a very specific type of file that the phone can handle, it will flat out reject all file transfers.

I transferred a ring tone once from another phone via bluetooth, so i presume it can transfer files OK.

I am hopeful that in answering these questions someone is going to provide a link to the perfect product.

It will probably come down to the operating system on your nokia. I use a 6200 Classic which runs Symbian s60, which has to date accepted every file I've ever transferred from my laptop using the built-in bluetooth.

I also have to second the comments about the speed - I use it to transfer the odd mp3 file usually, and the transfer speed is somewhere around 200kb/s peak.

Hoy, :)

Depending on your phone, you may or may not be out of luck. Some phones allow some operations with other phones, but in order to interact with a PC, they actually require proprietary software.

I don't know the current state of the art, but if your phone is three years old, it may well be one of those. I know Nokia enjoyed selling their Nokia PC Suite for a bit of a buck...

Cheers,
J.

Bear in mind HotStuff wants to transfer stuff from his phone to his PC, and not the other way around (presumably). It shouldn't matter what operating system the phone uses, just that it can detect a bluetooth dongle connected to his PC, which I guess would appear as a device named HotStuffPC or something.

Like elD says, if your phone came packaged with a USB charge/file transfer cable then you could just use that and bodyswerve all the hassle of bluetooth dongles.

What matters is that the phone acts as a mass storage device, which it very well may not.

That being said, the question as a whole is quite vague so it's pretty difficult to answer in any sort of certain manner.

That's an assumption you're making; as far as I can make out he's only interested in moving a ringtone or a picture or some other thing that's already on his phone to his PC.

Wait, do you mean so that it'll appear on his PC as a 'mass storage device'? I think I get where you're coming from now.

That's exactly what I'm saying. We're having to make assumptions about the phone's functionality because we don't have enough information. I would say that the vast majority of phones don't allow file transfer via bluetooth.

Sure, the phone may allow him to connect to the PC via bluetooth, but in all likelyness all that will achieve is the phone thinking the computer is a headset.

I'd disagree with that; the phone I bought 5 years ago had bluetooth file transfer. Admittedly that was quite expensive that one, but even cheap-o-matic phones have that built in as basic functionality these days.

I'm not even going to waste my time. Next time you find yourself riding a train or sitting in a pub or even at the work canteen, turn on your phone's bluetooth. See that huge list of bluetooth devices? Yeah.

Just to chip in, my old w300i from back in 2006 had bluetooth file transfer, and it wasn't particularly top end at the time. I must admit, I do think of bluetooth as a pretty "standard" inclusion on any modern handset.
