Anyone care to give me the one paragraph overview of what's interesting about Company of Heroes?

Erm, a whole paragraph?

Well, the Bourne Identity is almost back on so...

I'm still in shock after defending Carentan. That was amazing, the game is brutal.

Ok here's a quick overview.

Company of Heroes is a World War 2 RTS created by team Relic (the guys who brought us Dawn of War and Homeworld).

It is currently being touted as the first in the next generation of RTS games. It utilises graphics comparable to most FPS, boasts some incredibly impressive AI and has one of the most advanced physics engines on the market.

That's all well and good but it's the application of the physics engine that really takes this game into a new era.

Relic has decided that the key to their new strategy game, will be the use and destruction of cover. That is to say that every single piece of structure within the game can be occupied or destroyed. I'm afraid you'll have to read around for more on the building destruction scripts but it's basically done in sections and according to damage type. It means that no two building will ever look the same or collapse in the same way.

Troops are pretty simple but the variations can combine to create devastating and effective tactics. This game feels like you can actually achieve a solid defense by using well placed MG nests, fortified positions and mortar teams to create killing zones. Like wise these positions can be flanked mortared, artillery dropped, blitzed, etc...

Although a lot of these features can supposedly be found in other strategy games in this they actually seem to work and feel intuitive. Relic have made such strong AI scripts and have an extremely clever cover system (that has been expanded greatly from the DOW system) that makes full use of the physics engine to create a realistic world that you can shape to your advantage.

I could go on for ages about supply lines, troop types, command points, resources, ad infinium... but I think that you'll get a much better view of the game if you took the time to download it for yourself.

This really does feel like a BIG step foward in RTS. This and the new Supreme Commander coming out next year (and C&C 3 for you fan boys) means that the RTS is coming back in style.

Get this demo and the game too. I'll certainly be buying it.

Cheers,

pHatBambi.

Ill have a look in, it sounds pretty interesting it does, and Im such a fan of RTS games. However, I dont like the whole WW2 setting :/ Its nice in Command and Conquer where you get the new units and capabilities to explore, and in Age of Empires where its lovely to take a trip back in time (and then forward again :)), exploring all the tactics, techs etc. that have been utilised ... but WW2 has just been done and redone so much I dont really think theres much left to discover. I could be wrong of course, but Id really like to see something new rather than moving GIs and building P-34s that we've seen so many times. I dont know why, but WW2 games for me just seem so much more fun from an FPS perspective, rather than commanding.

I was a beta tester, and all I can say is the tank combat lets the rest of the game down so much...

Well if you were a Beta Tester why didn't you put foward your ideas on how to improve it?

Personnally I thought the tank combat was very good. Critical hit points, armour weaknesses, tank traps and making it so that tanks can't capture points only infantry means that the whole thing is quite tactical not just a case of build 10 tanks and own everything in sight.

Critical hits, not exactly realisticly done, even if the shell doesn't hit that point it can still score a critical hit.

Armour weaknesses, not really anything new here.

Tank traps, I'm annoyed that heavy tanks can just run them over, tank traps were designed to stop any tank getting past them, or die trying.

Tank pathfinding, like in Generals, pathfinding in this is disapointing, 3yr old drunk driver + tank + CoH tank's pathfinding.

Control points, surely they could have done it differently? instead of a UT04 domination style, why not set it up so territories are flexible, not just controled by small flags.

Tactical you say? Yes, that's right... Allies just have to spam howitzers and Axis just have to spam goliaths and tiger tanks.

Vehicles not being able to cap control points? Rather unrealistic I might say... In most cases the decisive moment was when one side got armour, that's when it could be considered captured and secured.

FYI I didput ideas forward, and if you didn't know, game companys hardly listen to customers, look at Generals again for instance, half the patches have ruined good elements of the game, and almost all of the time things were being suggested that would make the game better, yet nobody ever listened to them.

So yeah... Lemons!

Hmm theres mixed reviews now :/

I think I will wait until its released and read some online reviews from Gamespot or IGN until I make a choice.

I've been hammering away at the skirmish mode. As usual, my defensive nature comes out and I end up fortifying just about everywhere I can get an MG nest. The Reich seems to be able to push out tanks much earlier in the game than me... and sticky-bombs really don't cut it against them. Have more luck with the AT rifles with my paras, but even then I'm struggling. AT Guns appear to be the way forward.

One of the things I appreciate is that the troops aren't totally fragile and heavy weapons aren't guaranteed to hit. Dawn of War had the first, but somehow these feels just a slight bit more lenient and that, for me, makes the game more tactical and less of a twitch-fest.

I love the differences between the infantry and paratroopers development trees. Not tried out the armour one, but that's next on my list.

All in all, I'm very pleased with this demo and now I'm looking forward to the game's release. When is that?
