I'd go so far as to say that the Axis are more fun!
I've only played with them once, but I had been wondering how they were getting snipers and MGs so early in the game. It's cause they
start able to build them! The Allies have to build a special building to get access to those!
The Axis appear to be able to build a wider variety of infantry earlier, but I think that probably means you need to consider carefully what it is that you're trying to do. Also, the Allies riflemen are more versatile, in that they can build the observation posts on strategic points, where the Axis have to use their pioneers (equivalent of Allies engineers).
The Axis equivalent standard squads appear to be 1 man down on the Allies, but I didn't feel they were substantially weaker. Tactically, well positioned troops seem to waste equivalent but badly positioned troops.
Oh, and the German voiceovers are just cooler.
