Solved!

Got Norton Firewall and Virus?

Simply allowing COH through the firewall isn't good enough, apparently Norton AV considers COH a virus..... :s

So, do the following:

It's probably something to do with RO (Relic Online), although it could be your PC struggling with the game?

EDIT: On second thought, it's probably the host has a bad connection, you get the same sort of thing on Generals if you play with someone that has a bad connection.

My connection to RO is fine (as it's server based) just as it is with BF2 and similar

Hardware wise, my computer isn't awesome, but copes with the game on med - high in singleplayer, so to account for that I've lowered the settings for multi

My problems are all P2P connection related, so really it's either a problem with my "local" settings (norton etc) or mid-point settings (on the router)

Anyone?

Both you and Bambi appear to be running a Norton security application and both of you appear to have issues. I wonder if that's related?

Would it be worth swapping to using Windows Xp firewall and AVG free virus scanner. Then you could get rid of Norton.

I used to have problems with Norton alot.

Aye, I've got a feeling I may have sorted it, I'll do some more testing before I go wild, but if I have fixed it (and it wasn't just luck) then yes, Norton is the problem, but turning it off won't help!

I don't know a single person with Norton that hasn't had some kind of problem with it...

Psi please keep your posts more respectful to other members. I don't want to see anymore sarcastic and blunt replies made by you, there is no need for it.

Right....

Multiplayer is completly fine, unless you try and play with more that 2v2

So yes, moi Piac, Nanor and Gizmo had a ledgendary game..

Anymore and it dies horribly......

Piac's suggested it could be a bandwidth issue, but I havn't ever had a problem in other games.

Could there be any firewall restrictions (like no more that 3 incoming connections?)

The other solution; is it could be someone other than me, so over the next few days I'll play 2v2's with others and see if a problem crops up :)

Any ideas?

Unlikely, though distantly possible.

This is distinctly possible. As I understand it, CoH runs a peer-to-peer system, only using RO's servers for game advertising; this is a pretty familiar model these days with BitTorrent et al.

IIRC, DoW used a similiar system, though I'm not clear whether the codebase is related or not (you'd assume there was a fair bit of sharing, wouldn't ya?). For DoW, it worked that if one player in a group quit and they held the server baton, the server baton was passed off to another in the peering group.

My research over at the user help forums for CoH also leads me to believe that it is important which user currently holds that server flag as that will affect how the connections are built and what configuration is thereby required. Maybe you could play around with who is hosting and what order you connect in?

I think in some manuals it actually tells you to have the highest spec'd PC as the host for best performance, be that hardware and internet speed. I'm not sure if that applies to CoH but my best guess is that it does.

PS. KillCrazy, I would like you to PM me in the future rather than discuss things like that in public.

No Psi, I don't have to offer you the courtesy of sending you a PM just to explain to you how to behave on this forum. You've had enough of this courtesy in the past. Your behaviour thusfar has lacked enough respect for me to offer you any favours as to take you outside and talk to you politely about how you should conduct yourself here.

Heed my words, heed the warnings.

Yuppidy do, you know when you're downloading too much and TS goes all crackly? I thought that was because you didn't have enough bandwidth left for it to work effectively, soooo when Fi$hy was in a 2v2 it was fine, but when we stepped it up to a 3v3 he lagged in game and his TS voice became all crackly, just like when downloading too much! So voila, I guess bandwidth problem!

Go on, tell me I'm wrong! I DARE YA!!! :)

You're wrong (well you asked for it :p )

I seem to have similar problems with the game in that greater numbers of players give me grief. The difference is that in my case I just can't connect to a game if there is more than one other player. I've recently discovered that my router is crap though so I'll let you know if my new one (on order) helps at all.
