Marriage was originally a religious matrimony between man and women, then over the years as we grow as a people and made it a civil right. So ignoring the religous side of marriage would ignore everything about marriage except the signing of the papers and money.
Also it wasn't a religious quote, sex before marriage is a quote for the times when the horny teenagers didn't shag at the first sign of bare leg back in the days of culture.
Those days must have sucked =p.
