Doing our bit to cut energy usage

Hmm, i don't mind landrovers as much as i mind rangerovers, because they aren't luxury cars, but functional instead, they sort of lack the S in SUV.

As for really big cars, i would have no sympathy if you die horribly while owning either this or this.

Anyway, i've used energy-saving fluorescent lights from time to time, but they don't always fit into existing places, the light colour isn't always pleasant, you can't dim them and there's the starting lag whichs is annoying when you need light quickly like in a hallway, or a toilet at night....
Because of all that use has waned here to only our two exterior lights, when i get my own house though i'll use them more.

I wonder how much energy goes into the making of one of those? Does it yield more than it takes to produce?

possibly - its always a worry when you look at the lifetime of one of these units. I don't have an answer though ... but I still want one :)

Do you mean compact fluorescents, loki? Wikipedia doesn't mention anything about it (which i suppose could suggest it's not controvercial), i did find this sheet on mercury emissions, if your power doesn't come from coal, you could have a bit more emission. In the EU though CFL's are recycled.

Compared to ordinary bulbs a conservative estimation comes to a 248KWh saving in a 40w bulb's life, thats _a lot_ of energy, more than enough to melt a tonne of iron, and afaik they don't require any especially energetic processes to produce, they use small amounts of material and all of that is mass-produced.
