I suggest all of you trying the Steam demo read the first post here. It turns out that if you want to upgrade your account to a full account you need to jump through a few hoops to do so.

I'm afraid that what you've read on the Steam forums is incorrect. You are able to purchase the game through Steam for 14,95 $ and most likely the response that was quoted from our customer support team was based on some kind of a misunderstanding.

What you need to do is to go to your Steam client, right click 'EVE' in 'My Games' and select 'Properties'. There you'll see a button 'Visit EVE Account web site' that you can click on order to upgrade your account. When you upgrade your account all characters and their assets will stay intact, and the remaining days from trial period are added to the 30 days that are purchased.

I see that one Steam user paid 19,95 instead 14,95, and my guess is that this user upgraded the account through the EVE-online web pages instead of using the steps described above.
