Oooh, don't get me started on Hysteria! Actually, too late! I learned about that in my Ancient History lecture the other day.
They used to believe that Hysteria was caused by the woman's womb moving up inside her body and getting lodged in the neck until they died, so they would attempt to cure this through several means:
1: Prescribing sex (as they believed women wanted nothing but sex all the time in Ancient Greece)
2: Waving crap in a woman's face to scare the womb back down into it's proper place.
3: Putting some nice incense under the woman to coax the womb back into place.
Anyway... my favourite word is possibly "facetious".
