Another damnable thief. That said, I'm fairly sure that he's the brother of the goblin that ran off with an axe in their back. I think Shorast must have put his name on that axe because the alert goes out "Snatcher!" and yet this goblin rushes straight at Shorash and tries to end him. A dog and a new recruit chased the goblin off without further ado but failed to actually kill it. At least there wasn't any further casualties.
I've asked Shorast to step down as leader of the militia. The other dwarves were feeling inadequate and not able to live up to his one-handed goblin crushing fist of doom. I'll call on him again when the fortress is in real danger.
Instead I've promoted one of the newer dwarves who has a tiny bit of combat experience from some previous endeavour. Welcome, Olon. I've upped his squad to 4 and they will pull melee weapons and leather armour at the first sign of trouble. Really could do to be training them up but I don't think I have enough time left before my year is out.
Instead, I'm focusing on digging bedrooms for all the current occupants. 24 rooms in all. I've had to promote another of the new arrivals to lumberjack, despite his lack of experience, as Shorast can't wield an axe any longer. That said, it's not a difficult job and he'll learn quickly. Yes, that does imply that we can make axes, now, though there's no supply chain running for it; just axes on demand.
I think our hospital is better able to cope, now. Ushat is now the supervising doctor with Moldath as her nurse. I happened to see Moldath looking over Shorast's wounds the other day. Seems that he's also wounded his foot but he's still up top pumping out beds from his carpentry workshop. Tough bastard.
Midwinter has passed and all we've had is rain. Perhaps it won't freeze here after all?
