[DF] Fortress Embark & Year 1 (Ronin Storm)

Another damnable thief. That said, I'm fairly sure that he's the brother of the goblin that ran off with an axe in their back. I think Shorast must have put his name on that axe because the alert goes out "Snatcher!" and yet this goblin rushes straight at Shorash and tries to end him. A dog and a new recruit chased the goblin off without further ado but failed to actually kill it. At least there wasn't any further casualties.

I've asked Shorast to step down as leader of the militia. The other dwarves were feeling inadequate and not able to live up to his one-handed goblin crushing fist of doom. I'll call on him again when the fortress is in real danger.

Instead I've promoted one of the newer dwarves who has a tiny bit of combat experience from some previous endeavour. Welcome, Olon. I've upped his squad to 4 and they will pull melee weapons and leather armour at the first sign of trouble. Really could do to be training them up but I don't think I have enough time left before my year is out.

Instead, I'm focusing on digging bedrooms for all the current occupants. 24 rooms in all. I've had to promote another of the new arrivals to lumberjack, despite his lack of experience, as Shorast can't wield an axe any longer. That said, it's not a difficult job and he'll learn quickly. Yes, that does imply that we can make axes, now, though there's no supply chain running for it; just axes on demand.

I think our hospital is better able to cope, now. Ushat is now the supervising doctor with Moldath as her nurse. I happened to see Moldath looking over Shorast's wounds the other day. Seems that he's also wounded his foot but he's still up top pumping out beds from his carpentry workshop. Tough bastard.

Midwinter has passed and all we've had is rain. Perhaps it won't freeze here after all?

I write this in the desparate hope that the ones who follow will find it and heed my warning.

A kobold thief snuck in the front door. As per usual, we mustered up to chase it off. It seems this was a terrible mistake. Our militia party was caught in a goblin ambush: 1 archer, 5 lashers. Realising we were over extended, I ordered the retreat, but our new lumberjack rushed the enemy anyway. I think she's still out there, somewhere...

The rest of our forces withdrew to the gates, only to be ambushed by a second goblin raiding party as they passed through the gates. The goblins have taken the gates and have begun murdering everyone. I only had 3 more days before handing over this fortress to my successor and now everyone is dying around me. I saw Shorast fall just a half hour ago.

It'll be only a matter of time before they come for me. I fear this fortress is lost. Heed my warning: the goblins are out there and you must be prepared!

It's a massacre. I write this as I flee the fortress. I have retrieved a map and marked the positions of the enemies as best I can. I will probably not make it to freedom. I just hope that those that follow have better fortune and bring more soldiers.

My reign as overseer is over and even as spring draws in I see life escaping me and my comrades. Woe to us all.

...

So, er, they're not quite all dead but recovering from here looks like a long shot. I think we're into abandon and recover sort of situations. Seriously, I lost about three quarters of everyone in the last week of my stewardship, and I don't think we've killed even a single goblin.

Thoughts?

Either way, here's my save:

Sounds like it will just make it more fun for us! I vote for waiting until all dwarves are dead before retreating and starting again. :P

You sadist! My poor dwarves are bleeding out and you want them to hang about so they can suffer?! Criminal, I tell you, absolutely criminal!

Well, if it's not them it will be another group of hapless dwarves! ;)

Though if you restart you could embark with some more heavily armed dwarves!

Nah, in my opinion there's no soldiering on. It's a matter of days before everyone is killed, or a lone dwarf is left hanging out in the corner of the map waiting for the goblins to find him...

Abandon and reclaim seems like the humane (dwarfane?) option.

@Angelic: what's your preference?

Aye, it does sound rather grim if there really are so many Goblins about! Definitely need a very militarised fortress.

I count 10-14 goblins, and 10 surviving dwarves, of which two are seriously injured and two are children. Of the remaining, only one dwarf is armed. Massacre. I feel so sorry for them all.

I had a look at the save. I'd suggest setting up a burrow to keep dwarves inside for now. If you can get some metal armour and a few weapons forged, the goblins shouldn't be a real challenge.

Not having dabbled much in the military side of DF, I wouldnt mind in the least passing year two to Xarlaxas or whoever wants to have a go at it :)

Hah! My experience with the military so far has been squads of dwarves chasing goblins and failing to catch them, every time! At least I know how to control squads vaguely. Heh. I could give it a go and see what happens. . . .

How much profanity am I allowed to use if things go tits-up? :p

The more the better IMO :)

You do have the option to abandon and reclaim, I feel.

Honestly, I can't see the military option working.

Well, if Angelic would like me to have a go I'll take his turn and he can have mine, I'll give the Military option a try and if it fails will reclaim.

That sound good to people? :)

Sounds good to me :) I'd really rather take it when it's a bit less...on the edge :) (Although that's where DF always seems to be, just hanging on by a thread.)

Well, I'm a bit busy trying to get an aging laptop to function, but once I've done with that I'll load up the save and have a look-see. :)
