Guild Wars 2

Given that a few of you are still playing Guild Wars, you may well be interested in Guild Wars 2 (link to: Eurogamer). Looks like they're planning to continue with the no-subscription-fee model, which is good news. There is a relatively long reveal trailer, which makes it all look very pretty. Can't compare to current Guild Wars as I've not played it in a long long time.

Release date is TBC but I imagine it can't be more than 6-9 months away given that they're warming up the market with trailers.

I'd happily pay a subscription to play GW2 if it's anywhere near as good as GW1. The fact that they're still sticking to the no-subscription path makes them absolute heroes in my eyes.

You can play as a Charr!

In terms of pure relaxation and enjoying the eye candy whilst playing, there's not a lot beats GW.

Yeah, it's a really good chillout game. Excellent music, artwork and visuals with a world that just invites you to explore. Post-Searing Ascalon is a ruinous, apocalyptic hellhole, but I had a wander round it with Captain Crumb and found some breathtaking murals at each of the area's corners.

Mural at Dragon's Gullet

Mural Southeast of Serenity Temple

Mural West of the Breach

It seems a bit sad in some ways, sightseeing in a videogame, but it was just so amazing wandering through this desolate place and then chancing upon these bits of artwork the developers threw in. Great stuff. I think there must be another mural in the northeast I haven't found yet ...

finally beautiful fantasy mixed with some good old techno fantasy. For free you say? I almost spooged myself inside out!

A couple of official updates that go into a little bit more depth about the new skills system:

Part 1: GW2 Skills

Part 2: GW2 Weapons, Professions and Races

Also some stuff about the elementalist:

GW2 Elementalist

Quite exciting! I might be way off, but I get the impression that they're trying to fuse the traditional GW style gameplay with elements more commonly seen in single player RPGs (environmental interaction, equipment-based skills etc.) - all for the good, as far as I'm concerned. Still cannot wait to go a Charr!

Important quote:

We included secondary professions in early versions of Guild Wars 2, but due to the unique mechanics of each profession and the increased role of race in character customization, they are no longer a feature of the game.

Slightly disappointing, as it was fun to discover ways in which you could synergise skills from two completely different professions and make them work in harmony. Still, I'm sure they have something in store for us that gives us a similar degree of customisation and experimentation.

I would like to see ncSoft get away from the Group Fetish they have.

GW: Almost impossible to solo (Without henchmen)

AION: Almost impossible to solo (Unless you master your class by level 6.)

1. It is called -Guild- Wars for a reason
2. Almost impossible to solo without henchmen? Hah! Easy as pie. Just have to be quick ;)

Well, yeah, as far as I'm aware. Already the alliance we have joined have helped me see parts of the game I never would have if THN had continued to go it alone. We have our little weekly GW meetings, and I know for sure that fist and myself are always happy to help people.

Hoy, :)

I would like to see ncSoft get away from the Group Fetish they have. [...]

Wouldn't that defeat the multiplayer part of MMORPG? :p

There is a difference between being able to solo a normal mob your level, and being able to do quests as a group.

I never said there wasn't?

In that case, I guess the answer to the question in that second quote block is, no, it wouldn't...

Cheers,
J.

I reckon it would. ArenaNet are always fiddling bits and bobs here and there to stop people exploiting builds that allow you to solo farm. If they allowed that kind of thing to go on then nobody would guild up at all and it'd be shit.
If you want to play the game on your own, then heroes and henchies are perfectly serviceable (and, often, more serviceable) alternatives to your fleshy friends. If you want to go out and solo farm to rake in more loot for yourself then you need to either work hard on making a new build that beats the system, or play a single player RPG.
