[idea] THN Glasgow LAN?

Would you like to (and be able to) attend a THN LAN event in Glasgow?

This one's for the THN members based in and around Glasgow, however other THN members are welcome if they want to - I'm toying with the concept of perhaps organising a LAN event sometime in the next few months?

I'm looking at a few things at the moment: interest, format, cost, feasibility.

Interest: That's up to you - an event needs people to be worthwhile and the more the merrier. If you're interested vote in the poll!

Format: This is an interesting one. The way I see it, we've got a few options:
  • Hold the event in someone's house if they're willing. Everyone brings a PC or laptop to the event.
  • We all descend on a random internet cafe somewhere convenient and basically take it over for the day.
  • Any outlandish ideas we can think of. :D
Cost: Well most of us are students so it's going to have to be cost-effective if it's to succeed.

Feasibility: The combination of all of the above.

So vote in the poll and let me know what you think. :D

Edit: Some more information.
  • This is not part of the THN meet in August - this is something entirely separate I am proposing.
  • This is only a brainstorming of ideas and a polling of interest - I'm not saying this will definitely happen but rather I am saying that with the right number of people involved it can go ahead.
  • Don't vote for the "yes" or "no"in the poll if you aren't going to be able to go. It's good to have your support, but I need accurate numbers! :D If you just want to see the results every time you look at the poll, without influencing the results, choose the 3rd option.

Based on past experience, someone's house is probably your best bet. It helps if someone is renovating and has a huge, empty basement ;)

It's always good to add an option that allows people "hey, look, I just want to see the results all the time, thanks". Just a thought. :)

Internet cafes are mince. Actual mince. In fact, no. Mince that has been left maturing under the cooker for 3 months, while you wonder what the dog has been sniffing at, and then when you pull out the cooker to fix a leaking pipe it gets smeared all over the floor, reacts horribly with bleach and infests the whole room, before you decide the better option is just to burn your house down and claim insurance.

I like the idea of a LAN at someones house, tho. If youre planning one in the near future then I wont be able to attend because my PC is family's and until I can get one of my own Im sunk. You should get one together and if its a success then arrange few more and ill try to attend.

I'd be up for it.

If it couldn't be held in someones house then we could go into town to the new "Microplay Gaming" place. It's much better than an Internet cafe and they have high end machines with lots and lots of games to play.

So that is certainly one option.

I think I saw an ad for that place in the subway - yeah it looks interesting. Hosting it at someone's house is starting to sound like the best option in terms of popularity here - although some people haven't yet commented so we'll wait and see.

I'll definitely keep in mind Microplay - I think they had 32 (or was it 64?) player setups for BF2 and the like, which means a lot of fun for us :D.

Also, something to consider is that we may be able to host the LAN game on a machine connected to the internet, meaning the rest of THN would be able to play games with us too. :D

Also please let me know of suitable LAN-friendly games you want to play. A quick list:

  • Source engine games (CS:S etc)
  • Goldsrc engine games (NS, TS, etc)
  • BF2
  • UT (the original)
  • UT2004 and mods
  • Doom with jDoom 3D models pack
  • Doom 3
  • Quake 3 / 4
  • Medieval: Total War
  • Rome: Total War
I'm looking for some more diverse games too, if possible, so that it's not purely shooting - not everyone coming to an event could handle hours on end of FPS action.

Hey you missed action quake !

Oh and Diablo2 ... and Total Anihilation and starcraft and tribes ... oh sod it there's too many to mention :)

I heartily reccomend co-op games in a LAN environment. We always had a blast with Serious Sam and Diablo 2 being very popular alongside the ever fun Counter Strike and UT2004.

Oh god yes, Serious Sam! Moooooooooo *thunder*thunder*thunder*! :)

Alien Swarm in LANs is great. Or flooding some online team game on one side.

I used to server op two Action Quake servers when I was working for The Planet Online, many moons ago. A very smart mod, but it's really pretty aged now. Y'know, this is where Counterstrike started out, back in the beginning... :)

In theory a goo idea, and I wouldn't mind going if its near to me. If you think I'm dragging my ?800 desktop around the country, you have another thing coming though :) A couple hours of driving, fine, 6 hours on a train with it, good luck!

Okay, some more info about a potential option: the Microplay LAN gaming centre... their website is at: http://www.microplaygaming.com. Given that they offer nightly cash prizes for gaming tournaments I think it's safe to say that they have potent enough hardware to run the kind of games we like to play :D. Of course, this means that THN'ers who don't live near Glasgow don't have to lug their gaming rigs around the country - they just turn up on the day with a desire to do some pwning.

The downside? It's about ?20 for a day's pass, and of course there is no guarantee the place would have enough machines to accomodate us all (depending on how many turn up on the day) - I don't know if they offer a booking facility or not.

So that's one option - there was not much enthusiasm for an internet cafe (understandably, right enough).

If you're interested in coming, then please let me know if there are any more games in addition to the existing list that you want us to play. For example after reinstalling Serious Sam I've decided it should definitely go on the gaming list :D. Remember that it doesn't have to be an FPS - in fact variety is welcomed.

I'll have a think about other ideas and post up if I think of anything further.

Dude, you need to be a Scottish citizen to get the free tuition at a Scottish Uni... otherwise you pay the normal fees an English person would...

Right, so further developments on this one...

Essentially since it's going to be the first THN event of it's kind I think it would make a lot of sense to piggyback on another LAN event to make up numbers. And we can do just that...

Raikiri informs me that there is a huge LAN event at Destiny Church in Glasgow (near Crossmyloof {what a name} station). The game of choice? Source engine - expect to be playing CS:S, The Hidden, Source Forts, multiplayer garry's mod, and loads more. And, of course, BF2.

It's a "bring your own PC" event - so you're probably going to need a lift in to town if you're taking your main tower systems (or if you're going light like me you can walk it... ah laptop bliss :D).

Anyway if I could just gauge enthusiasm for this proposal I'll decide whether or not it's a viable option to go. I can guarantee that the event itself will be busy - the last event of it's type was last month, in the Edinburgh Destiny Church and the game of choice was BF2... Raikiri had some stories to tell!

So... fire away.

I aint taking my PC into crossmyloof because.

  1. As you know my tower sucks
  2. Crossmyloof is too far away for me to drive
  3. My tower unit STILL sucks.

So, therefore I shall decline.
