If I Had Admin Powers...

Here's a little game for us all to play. The name of this game is "If I Had Admin Powers...".

There are two aims for this game. First is to amuse us with all the BoFH stuff any of us might think of to do. The second, and more important (to me) is to catalogue things that THNers would do within THN if only they had the powers, skills and time to do them.

Time is an obvious constraint on all of us; for these purposes, don't fret about time unless it'll obviously take seven years to complete with a team of ten or something.

Skills are another obvious constraint; for these purposes, just believe it can be done (unless, of course, it can't).

To be clear, I'm not advocating handing out Admin powers on THN as a result of this. But I am interested in knowing what people would do or have done to make THN better.

So, I'll start:

If I had Admin powers... I'd finish off figuring out the required parts to implement the cookies instead of reputation system and set that in place for all to enjoy cookie goodness.

... and ...

If I had Admin powers... I'd give myself a way to turn thatbloke's shoutbox emote of "thatbloke slaps <name> with a slimy trout" into "thatbloke slaps himself with a slimy trout" whenever he put my name in there.

:D

Hoy, :)

I'd give T-Bone whatever he needs to fix the L4D server...

I'd give thatbloke whatever he needs to put together the TMNF server...

I'd stickify and unstickify more threads in the WoW and WoW Officers section...

I'd improve on the event scheduling functionalities... in some heretofore undefined way...

I'd ban the word "heretofore"... :)

Cheers,
J.

...bugger. This isn't the shoutbox.

If I had Admin powers, I'd make that macro work in regular posts :D

hmm if i had infinite time to do something it would probably culminate in
- A proper server side lobby mod for the L4D server
- Getting round to doing all those little fixes and tweaks that would improve the dedicated servers we're running
- A nice integration of wiki and V-bulletin
- stealing amber from Haven and making it work again (i find blue a lot more difficult to read for some reason :/)

as for amusing things i think i'd implement a "drivel" tag and make it forcebly apply to Blokes posts

oh and finally i'd have to come up with something witty and amusing rather than just "mega THNer"

If I had admin powers I'd probably try to improve the layout of THN. One thing would be to work on a new colour scheme as well as changing or adding various things. For example adding interesting stats from users on the side.

The main thing I'd attempt to work on would be achievements of sorts. Sort of like if you win, say, a raffle you could get a title or something fun and a nifty little page to showcase your awesomeness. :)

Because you suck donkey balls. And if I were an admin, I'd *make* you suck donkey balls. Every hour, on the hour. While suspended upside down over a giant vat of killer trout.

I'd roll out jabber over kerberos with an ldap back end. I'd also integrate vbulletin auths into the ldap backend (possibly via mod_kerberos) so that users only had one login to handle ssh/board/jabber logins. I'd possibly also roll out asterisk with the same kerberos auth over iax/sip (not possible at the moment so dreaming on this one).

I'd then write a nice interface to manage it all.

I would install a 'translate' function for moments like this :) Compared to that the suggestion that it could maybe be easier to post pictures (though there may be good reasons why it isn't), and the idea of re-invigorating the soap box (a weekly ethical dilemma; a news feed to give people something to respond to?) seem, well, tame and ill-informed.

If I had Admin powers... I'd add a badges system to acknowledge and laud the contributions of the THNers who make this place a decent place to be and thereby hope that more people contributed because they'd see and feel acknowledged.

If I had Admin powers... I'd find a way to siphon off cookies in my secret cookie base and watch the price of cookies rise as the world's supply dwindled, then use the fact that I own the majority share in world cookies as my platform to take over the world.

If I had admin powers... I would nuke the WoW portion of the forums. (Or at least make it so I don't have to see it :))

1. Not be Judgemental and or a Hyprocit.
2. Take context into my decisions.
3. Try and make this place as fun as I remember it being back in the hay day.

I would also probably try and organise more events like the raffle which seems to be succesful in bringing the community together, if only for a short time.

1) I'd edit the database to give me ALL THE COOKES EVAR. OMNOMNOM

2) I'd change the home page to use my, better design from the banner competition last year ;-)

Oh, I would change the url from games.thehavennet.org.uk to forums.thehavennet.org.uk so that I can access this from college without 'Bloxx' flagging it as a "gaming website". (It also flags the BBC website as a "blogging website")

I feel there's some form of claim against the school to be had here. The BBC is a publicly funded news source, blocking the BBC has to be against some form of rule?
